Easy to say when it's not your community and your life being ripped apart by a stroke of a pen you had no say over.

Again: In Federation territory, there is pretty much an infinite amount of living space. Those colonists could have had their pick of any Federation world, and (thanks to replicator technology) their existing homes could be recreated, in precise detail, on any of those worlds.
The question of "defending their homes" has no meaning when faced with circumstances like this. In the end, what IS your home? Where you lay your hat? When faced with two alternatives here - sign the treaty (and have a few hundred colonists move), or go to war with Cardassia - the choice is clear. The greatest good for the greatest number.
I'm not saying who's right, but don't make it into something straightforward.
