I've really enjoyed the Mystery Case Files games. The early ones are mostly just interestingly themed hidden object games. However, later entries in the series incorporate a lot more puzzles and story. And they all seem to have some creepy theme. The Ravenhearst games are often considered the best in the series, along with Dire Grove. The most recent Mystery Case Files games aren't quite so good; the series changed hands and got a little too ambitious.
Back in the day I picked up a couple of cheap games off the shelf that I ended up enjoying a lot. They were called Barrow Hill and Scratches. Definitely not the greatest graphics in the world, so if that's what you're looking for then you'll probably be disappointed. But dark, creepy stories and fun puzzles to solve.
