Unpopular Trek opinions game

Obvious unpopular opinion: I think Jadzia Dax is one of the more interesting characters in the history of the franchise.

Unpopular opinion: The reason DS9 didn't catch on like TNG was primarily because the general public didn't connect with some of the cast like they did with the TNG characters. DS9 had a good cast overall but it was not as strong as TNG's cast. Dax was a poorly conceived character. Kira and Bashir should have been recast.

I disagree, because I think the reason DS9 didn't catch on as much as TNG had more to do with TNG being conventional Star Trek in a way DS9 wasn't.

And, unpopular opinion here, I don't think the TNG cast was that strong. McFadden, Sirtis, and Frakes in particular.

I will avoid mentioning my opinion of Picard because that's too unpopular even for this thread. :)

Totally agree.

In the first DVD release of Star Trek III Shatner tells the world that he taught Nimoy everything he knew about directing. Nimoy was scheduled to direct an episode of TJ Hooker. Shatner says he guided him on every shot.

Unpopular Opinion: Star Trek: First Contact is overrated.
Is it the best movie ever made? No. But none of the Trek movies are, however it is one of the best Trek movies, definitely in the upper half.
Agreed. Nimoy's stuff felt like they were made-for-TV movies.
It was (my understanding) primarily Nimoy's decision to replace Alley with another actress, eventually Curtis. As a director this was imo a mistake.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it.

TSFS comes off as paint by numbers, checking thing off a check list. The movie has a few nice moment, but not many.

Unpopular Opinion: Star Trek aliens are too single-minded, (e.g. honor, logic, acquisition, religion, nastiness, symbiont... etc.) .It gets old. The show would benefit from more complex aliens.

Kirsty Alley's departure was a salary issue, not a decision made by Nimoy.

I actually love TSFS. It captures the family aspect of the crew great, and was probably the one film that got the tone of the original correct without getting out of balance (was a seamless blend of adventure, drama, action, humor, fun, etc...which is precisely what TOS got right).

Fully agree. Unfortunately the fans are conditioned to think that way now, and get all bent out of shape when we see any kind of diversity portrayed in a Trek species.

That isn't current humanity. Females are second class citizens within Ferengi culture.
Major wars aren't current Humanity, or for that matter slavery? There are (my understanding} more slaves today than at any other point in Human history.

My observation is that simply being male doesn't make you a first class Ferengi citizen.

I'm not in any way saying the Ferengi are perfect, but they got some things right that we got wrong, and that outweighs having a bad dress code.

Wrong, Nimoy didn't (for some reason) want Alley back, but legaly she had to be offered the role, so she was offered a absurdly low amount and she passed.

Fair enough. But, excluding half the population from business, commerce and leaving the house, or traveling is a huge wrong that I would not trade for how much humanity is working to improve itself, even if there is a long way to go.

But, by all means, please emulate them :)

Well, we have "cultures" where women are forced to hide every square centimeter of skin when they go outside, even their eyes are hidden behind an opaque veil. That's almost as bad as being forbidden to wear clothes.

Unpopular Opinions: TNG's "The Inner Light" and "I, Borg" are both hideously overrated episodes. The moral dilemma over wiping out the Borg is particularly absurd when you're dealing with Space Nazis Squared.

Jeffrey Combs is great, but Weyoun is pretty boring. Brunt is the much more interesting and entertaining of Combs' DS9 characters.

George Takei and Grace Lee Whitney both turn in horrible acting jobs in VOY's "Flashback."

TMP and STV both grow on you over time.

Yeoman Tonia Barrows is WAY hotter than Helen Noel.

TOS is still the best Trek series.

William Shatner gets much more grief than he deserves.

That or a montage.
Even Rocky had a montage.

I'd rank Star Trek: First Contact inferior to the classic films but superior to the JJ movies. It has a lot going for it but as an action/horror/sci fi movie it merely coasts along to a conclusion. It didn't draw me in or keep me on the edge of my seat like say TWOK or TUC. Also I thought the Borg Queen who dresses like a Dominatrix was just silly.
