Would you prefer the title of Skipper / Captain if you were in charge of a StarShip?

I think it would depend on my *rank* and the ship I commanded. If my rank was anything below Captain, and/or the ship was of a type that had a very small crew (say, below 30, like a scout) or a role that meant the work environment was casual (a pure research ship or transport, for instance, as opposed to something likely to be called on for more militant missions), then I might prefer "Skipper", or just my own first name, which has a meaning that still makes it kind of command-ish. But for a larger ship or more militant one, I'd regard it as more important to maintain the proper discipline, and I'd definitely require "Captain".

You do know the word has existed long before Gilligan's Island, right?
McHales Navy, 1962-66 was before and concurrent with Gilligan's Island, 1964-67. The crew of Patrol Torpedo Boat, PT-73 called Lt. Cmdr. Quinton McHale(Ernest Borgnine) "Skipper".

I'd prefer being called my rank, which includes not being called captain if I'm not one, but just happen to command a ship. I've always found that shit to just be confusing AF

But if you command a ship you are the Captain.

But you could also be a commander in rank, who "Commands" the ship, & not yet reached the rank of captain. I'm saying that even though it's accepted nomenclature to be called captain in that instance, I'd prefer to not be. I don't know why, it just seems off to me

I think new StarFleet policy in my Head Canon should have lower ranked personnel call somebody "Captain" ONLY if they are the rank of "Captain" and/or in command of a StarShip/StarBase. Otherwise, whomever is in charge should be called "Skipper", especially if they are only in charge of a shift or temporarily in charge. This avoids confusion as to who's the permanently assigned CO, and those who are in command on a temporary basis.

Post-Captain is an obsolete alternative form of the rank of captain in the Royal Navy. The term served to distinguish those who were captains by rank from: Officers in command of a naval vessel, who were (and still are) addressed as captain regardless of rank.

Traditions don't always make sense. Regardless, it's your ship :)

More specifically, to distinguish officers with the rank of captain from those with the rank of commander (or master and commander, earlier). Their only job in the navy being to command sloops, commanders were always addressed as captain, aboard ship or not, until the 1820s when commanders began to be assigned as seconds in command of ships of the line.

James Blish has Scotty call Jim “Skipper” in his adaptation of “The Doomsday Machine”:

He also spared “Brand” Decker. How much of this was Spinrad is hard to say without seeing the drafts.
