This is always going to be the logic. Something is bad and CBS is willing to throw more money at it in order to save face.

 

I'm sure there's a Ferengi Rule of Acquisition that says 'tis better to save money than to save face. Networks haven't hesitated to axe struggling shows in recent years. But DSC has reinvigorated the franchise in an exciting way, flawed though it may be.

 

Well, so when she rules in CBS's favor, CBS-haters have the easy out of saying she's considered incompetent by six out of seven lawyers.

Everything aside, I found the one rave review funny. I'm guessing she ruled in his favor?

 

I don’t think you understand have television shows work. If a show is a failure, you cut your losses and leave. If it’s a hit, you make more and develop spin-offs. It’s been like this for 60 years.

 

^ Yep. A show that by all accounts is meeting the goals that CBS has for it, including helping to make CBSAA viable, hardly represents wreckage.

Precisely so. Studios can be extremely tight fisted so the idea that they will keep shoveling money at a brand that is hemorrhaging money is odd, to say the least.

 

Well, sounds an awful lot like the Midnight’s Edge insider talking points and they were right about that one story once. Totally checks out.

 

Producers aren’t like your cousin that time he went to Vegas and was $2,000 in the hole, decided to let it all ride on red and ended up getting his legs broke by some legitimate businessmen. They tend to be far more cautious when it comes to money, only wanting to go with something they know will make money. Then if anything spooks them, they back off. It’s why we didn’t get any female led superhero movies for a decade after Catwoman bombed.

 

off topic but i have put it all on a stupid outside bet on the wheel like 5 times in my life, and each time was a total bust.
I mean, the odds dont work that way. I swear the minute the casino cameras see some schmuck put it all on Even or red or wahtever the croupier hits a button. They even give you a smug "you know you're fucked now" kind of look when you do it.

Kurtzman isn’t over day to day operations of Picard and from my understanding the team involved is different then the dsc team and is lead by the guy who brought us the best of the dsc shorts.

So basically unless Kurtzman leaves all trek is assumed bad?

Basically. Like it's one guy that can ruin or save the franchise. And if it's not Roddenberry, then it's the enemy.

 

Though I think that's the "never let your fans dictate the story you will tell" - because most of them don't really know what they want.

Star Trek - at it's most popular points - is a very lighthearted and optimistic show. Not that it doesn't get dark repeatedly - but the overall universe is a more cheerfull one, a familiar reality people actually want to live in. (In contrast to, say, nuBattlestar Galactica, which has much, much more intense stories, but honestly no one in their right mind would want to live in).

Everytime Star Trek did get dark and series, it had a profound "shit just got serious"-vibe, making it even more so intense and memorable. That's why these episodes (Best of Both worlds) are so beloved - because they were so rare!

It's the same thing with Spock - Over decades and decades, (mostly female) fans always wanted to see him smile, be happy! And yet - he never really did. That's why every single little smirk he did had such an impact. People craved for it. Whereas Quinto-Spock went very fast full emotional (because that's what people wanted to see for decades) - and yet, when he did, it didn't leave as much of an impact as it should.

 

Actually trek got better after Roddenberry stopped exerting as much control.

 

And yet, fear now reigns because of fan backlash.
