Poll If this was the end, would you be satisfied?

Man, I'm 50/50. I would have been satisfied as I felt it really did have an "ending" feeling. And I felt the loose ends were resolved in a satisfactory way. So... if that were it... yeah. BUT... I'm glad it's not.

 

I'm just sort of wrapping my head around that because Discovery's spore technology to me is/was so out of place for pre-TOS days and in many respects it seems even too advanced for the Voyager era as well. Obvious case in point that Voyager would've been home in a snap if this centuries old tech had been available to her. (Serious nonsense to suggest it was a big secret and that is why it was non-existent. Come on that is so unbelievable, even the Omega molecule though top secret was on record). So Discovery should be ancient technology and life forms blinking with wonder at an advanced 32nd Century, except she's not.

 

I don't have a problem with the drive existing in Pre-TOS days. The TNG era had plenty of prototypes for alternate FTL drives (Soliton Waves, Transwarp Conduits, Graviton Surges and Quantum Slipstream drives), that arguably worked in one way or another. Why does the TOS era have to be exempt?

 

Because of TOS being special. For reasons.

 

No, because we;d have no idea what is going on with the crew in the future or what that future would look like.

 

I'm still trying to get over the classified thing. Michael is probably the most famous/infamous officer in all of starfleet. Hard to imagine wiping somebody so famous from all of history.

I am glad they at least have tried to wrap Canon up. I can't wait to see what the 32nd century looks like. I hope they give them a nice budget

 

I'm pretty sure "Lower Decks" won't be sharing any of the talent so it wouldn't dilute anything. And remember that when we had two concurrent Treks in the past, that consisted of 4 times as many episodes as we have now.

At the very least, I expect this to happen lickety-ventually.

 

I would be. That works well as a series finale, and honestly, I'd rather follow Pike and the Enterprise than Discovery 930 years later.

Also, there is absolutely no reason the crew of Discovery couldn't just come back to the past, because time travel is possible, and 1000 years later, they would certainly know about it.

 

It's remarkably poor writing in that nothing in the events of DSC deviated beyond rationalization and needed any kind of in-universe band-aid (as opposed to this 201x revision of the look and feel, which could've been reset via some kind of temporal intervention, making sure the technology and society develop from, say, the ENT producers' approximate point of view). Bring up any detail and someone can rationalize it one way or another, especially since the showrunners do pay attention to the chronology even as they feel free to revise the production design.

 

Still don't understand the justification why (at the very least) the bridge and engineering crew decided to abandon their lives and follow Burnham into the future. For that matter it wasn't really established how much of the crew stayed aboard, given there would have to be more than a skeleton crew to keep a ship like Discovery which is typically crewed by hundreds functioning.

I imagine in season 3 they will feel obliged to remain in the future to defend whatever they find there or something.

 

This is a crew that was put together by a Captain who prized loyalty and wanted a crew which would stick together regardless of what they were up against. Also, the Discovery is a science ship, so likely half the full crew compliment are scientists not operations people.

 

Because they can't have a show with just Michael Burnham running around on the ship by herself (though it's apparently completely doable if the ship is on auto-pilot)
So writers shoehorned in someone for her to play with in Season 3. Much like canon "sync-up", best not to think too deeply about it. Just accept it and let it go.

 

voted no, because I suspect season 1 and 2 are a preamble for what's to come. So yes , I am satisfied with the preamble but now I want to see what happens next.

but I felt that way about Interstellar. The end credits start just when the amazing stuff might be about to happen.

 

I'm glad we are getting season 3, and I hope the writing improves. But considering all we know about BTS stuff, season 1 and 2 are not a preamble to anything. Producers were never planning to go into the future, they never felt they needed to "sshhh... we don't talk about Discovery" retcon it away.
So because Season 3 is going to be kind of a soft reboot, it's as if we're getting a new show (crew and ship is the same, but literally everything else is different). So with that in mind Season 2 finale does kind of work as a "soft series finale"
If other words if something where to go horribly wrong (say CBS goes bankrupt next few months) and Season 3 is cancelled, what we have now is ok-ish as a finale.

 

Burnham: "It's perfectly logical to you. The two of us roaming about the galaxy in the flagship of the Federation a science ship equipped for 150 separate simultaneous experiments. No crew at all."
Tilly: "We've never needed a crew before. And I could walk around in my underwear because who cares, anyway."
Burnham: "......about that."

If you're referring to the disjointed set of dialogue snippets and half-thought-out setting descriptions that occasionally find their ways to forum posts, then definitely
... otherwise it's just a bookmarked list of AO3 favorites. Yeah, one of these days I should definitely start welding my own notes together.

Anyway, to stay on topic, I'm glad much of the crew eventually decided to join and I hope to get at least a single verbal confirmation of how many people there actually are aboard as of Season 3. I'd range it from a conservative 30-35 to a larger 75-80, with the probable true figure somewhere in between. I doubt it's everyone, though.
