Star Citizen

The amazing thing about Star Citizen is that, at this point, is that it has gone on for so long and generated so much insanity that anyone of sound mind would think you're lying or exaggerating when you try to explain it. Like, any one story from this would be hard to believe, yet all are true:

- Exceeded original goal by a hundred and fifty million dollars, still do not have content from original demo in the game
- CEO and HR/Marketing director attempt to hide marriage
- HR/Marketing director sings Nazi song to Germans
- CEO tells HR/Marketing director to just fly first-class; HR/Marketing director tells this to media
- "Plucky little startup" has like 14 offices / divisions / subsidiaries spread across the globe
- In order to prove how honest and straightforward they were as a company, they promised backers that they would release financials in full if they didn't ship by a certain point; when they missed that deadline they simply issued a new TOS that removed any reference to a financial disclosure
- Have missed every single date and milestone they have set for themselves
- "Accidentally" release dev build to public since it was on an open server
- The Book of LOAF (how he's still employed after that got out is beyond me)
- Ticklegate
- Insanely expensive and impractical office furniture
- Ryan Archer
- Backers buying a $14k package of spaceships that they can't play
- Toxic, Orwellian community management
- Switching engines then lying about what it actually involved
- Stating Squadron 42 is a core part of the game, only for it to be spun off; later they claim it isn't separate but a la carte
- A $2 million loan--using Squadron 42 as collateral--for a game that raised millions
- The CryTek lawsuit for breach of contract

Like, how does all of that happen?

It goes back to Wing Commander. It’s seriously the epic tale of rise and fall.

I remember seeing the kickstarter for this and thinking it looked amazing.

Obviously that was some 6 years ago.

I forgot all about it to be honest and am catching up through this thread.

WOW

I was always hoping for a Wing Commander based mix of Strike Commander and Privateer were you would be commanding a merc carrier and its squadrons and could go around doing missions.

Good lord, has it been that long?

Kickstarter announcement was in 2012. According to leaked pitch decks to potential investors, development actually began in earnest in 2011.

Given that Roberts has already said that Squadron 42 isn't coming out this year, and Disco Lando effectively said the new update breaks the entire game and they'll have to re-code a whole ton of shit from scratch ... seriously, if you're still invested in this Ponzi scheme, get a refund now.

It's fascinating from a morbid point of view to see someone and something fail so completely at such a high level.. whenever someone fails at their job it's usually on a level that a healthy company can stomach (unless your are upper management).

I have caused my company a few thousands of loss over the years due to mistakes i made, got slapped lightly on my fingers and told to better pay attention in the future, that was it. Roberts has flushed millions down the drain and gotten people to invest thousands in a product that is very unlikely to ever see release.

As i said.. fascinating to see this unfold.

Got an update on it:

A new financial report reveals that the Star Citizen team have spent almost $200 million on the game thus far.

The Cloud Imperium Games team have published a financial breakdownof Star Citizen's development. It reveals many fascinating tidbits about one of the most lucrative (and controversial) games ever made. First off, it seems that the vast majority of the game's funding has come from backers. While recent years have seen more and more outside investments add to the game's financial war chest, it's clear that backers are still keeping this crazy train on the tracks.

Around the time of the original crowd-funding campaign, I remember thinking Star Citizen was a sure bet, and that nothing would ever come of Braben's efforts to revive Elite.

Funny how things turned out.

And in the meantime a new X game has been released which is basically the sandbox mode of Star Citizen, just without the badly implemented and unnecessary extravehicular elements or the insanele expensive Hollywood star voice cast for the single player element (is that even still on the table?).

And still there's some die hard fans who will lose the instant you dare to criticize Star Citizen.

the insanele expensive Hollywood star voice cast for the single player element (is that even still on the table?).

Apparently it's still on the table, but not likely to happen any time soon, or ever. Gillian Anderson describes working on Star Citizen as one of the most bizarre experiences of her career, and rumour has it (yeah citation needed I know) Gary Oldman walked away and wants nothing more to do with it.

Since I was a big fan of the Wing Commander series back in the day, the single player component is the only part I had any interest in. Funny thing is, the two games in the series I have the fondest memories of, Wing Commander II and Privateer, had practically zero involvement from Chris Roberts.

Also, rumour has it the next big expansion for Elite Dangerous will most likely be space legs, the ability to leave the pilot's seat and walk around, coming some time in 2020. I hope that's true, if only to continue FDev's long, proud tradition of upstaging Star Citizen every chance they get.

It's the buzz, at least. It has been a rumor for a while, but yeah, this latest update? It makes things suspect. So many QoL improvements made for this update seems to indicate some kind of movement ability we haven't had before. I am hoping it's space legs. *crosses fingers*
