BTW. I was just looking at a transcript of "The Menagerie" - I long thought that Kirk said he met Pike when he took command of Enterprise.

He doesn't say that. He says that they met when Pike "was promoted to Fleet Captain."

But Kirk's very next line is "I took over the Enterprise from him". So you could have Kirk meet him earlier but Pike has to stay in command of the Enterprise until Kirk, so you don't actually accomplish anything.

Elements of it I like, elements I dislike.

Boy, if that isn't Discovery in a nutshell...

I agree. There are a few nice elements. I liked the helm and the captains chair. The classic chair was great. All other chairs looked like seats they pulled out of cars. Wish they would have put more elements and colors from the classic set. It didn't feel like the to bridge but it looked cool. Still think it's an alternate universe version.

So, something that is virtually indistinguishable from the TOS set for most viewers. I personally think that's not a realistic expectation.

I don't think that's what dar means. Basically use similar coloring and shapes but gloss it up with better materials and add computer graphics where necessary. They did go to far with this design. The chair looked great though.

Actually he said that the only time they met was when the ship was handed over.

So even though the Cloud creature/Farragut incident happened in 2257 as well, Pike couldn't have been the one to go save the ship and have them meet 8 years too early.

While I personally agree with your interpretation, as long as Pike stays in command of the Enterprise for a bit after his promotion to Fleet Captain he can meet Kirk when he is promoted and later see him again when Kirk takes over the Enterprise without violating anything established in Dialogue.

As an old original Star Trek fan, while I do have an issue with the exterior 1701 Starship CGI model (IE I really dislike the split & swept back nacelle struts; although all the other aspects of said model are fine...):

I LOVE what they did for the 1701 Bridge set (as well as the Turbo Lift and Conference Room sets). It's updated to 2019 'cinema' standards; yet still VERY faithful to the original design.

Agreed. My first impression was, it looks modern but also distinctively it's the 1701 bridge, updated appropriately but still, immediately recognisable. They did a great job.

Screw dialogue. Have Kirk come aboard as security chief, then become a rival to Number One for Pike's ear.

I really don't get this fascination with redoing the old characters. Pike and #1 are fine, as they were in just one episode so there really wasn't much established about them.

If you're going to wank it, might as well wank it hard. Besides, how can anyone sleep without a canon explanation for why Number One left the Enterprise?!

No. There was already a Kirk show set in the Prime Universe. It was great, and doesn't need redoing. Pike show as a prequel to TOS is a lovely idea, redoing TOS is terrible idea.

Since this isn't really the Prime universe ....Why Not???

Why not?? It's pretty much doing it's own thing so they may as well....

The writers insist that it is the Prime Universe. All continuity errors will be classified and we never speak of them again...

I'm pretty much in agreement with this guy.....
