And the audience would trust Ackbar - we know him, he's the "It's a trap!" guy. If he tells Poe to sit down and shut up, we'll think Poe should sit down and shut up. But Holdo, as an entirely new character, doesn't have that built-in trust with the audience, so we side with Poe - which is exactly what Rian Johnson wanted us to do.
Or at least Disney...

To me this is why Holdo doesn't work. We the audience have no reason to trust her or care about her being right in the end. I mean is the whole point to make the hero look bad? Why would someone do that to your main character.
I know they are try to comment on these kind of action hero type of characters but that is a really weird message when your franchise is about action and fighting. At least if you cared about the character the arc would have some character value and maybe at least validate the point your trying to make by it coming from a character the audience cares about and respects. Leia can get away with that but not some new nobody.

- Rey could just be a clone of a daughter by Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru that Palpatine via Darth Maul had kepth on ice until Palpatine would someday rise and be reborn within the body of a Skywalker thus making him more powerful than ever before. He did go after Anakin and then later Luke so he has a interest in the Skwalker family line. Maul might have gotten killed or something and then Rey was adopted of sorts by the junk traders only they didn't know she was a Skywalker or Jedi.
