Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

Well, that kind of behavior would presumably get him killed instantly in the Mirror Universe, so I support this wholeheartedly for its poetic symmetry. I mean, if Mirror Brunt could be a selfless, gentle guy...

Mirror Burnham (navigating an asteroid field with Connolly and Pike in pods): "Magnetics are messing with my nav computer. Connolly, just take the stick manually."

Mirror Connolly: "OK, Burnham. I totally trust your judgement on this because you have more experience than I do. Switching to manual now....."

....Bam! [Mirror Connolly dead].

... after which Mirror Pike can be heard breathing a relieved "Finally!" into his mic.

72 hours from now, we'll be in the midst of watching the Season Finale. Bring it on!

After just finishing the Hell on Wheels season two finale a few minutes ago, there's nothing Discovery can do to top the "WHOA, SHIT!!!" ending.

I'll take your Hell On Wheels Season 2 Finale and raise you Oz Season 4.

I'll see your Oz Season 4 and raise you Ozzy Osbourne!

Never seen Oz. Though it is something I may try down the road.

I do think a big problem I have with Discovery is how conservative the storytelling really is. There is nothing in 28 episodes so far that has given me that "WHOA, SHIT!!!" feeling. Not even on the level of 1990's "Best of Both Worlds, Part I". It doesn't mean the show hasn't had some memorable moments, but nothing that has really elicited an emotional reaction from me.

It is a show that feels like it firmly has one storytelling foot firmly in the 60's/90's.

Feels like it to you. I happen to remember the '90s very well, and DSC doesn't feel like TNG, DS9, or VOY.

But on another note: Oz is great. So is Orange Is the New Black, if you want to seek out a similar series.

So do I. Discovery is no more bold than any of those shows were.

I bogged down on this show early in the second season.

Then it's not just Trek we disagree on. I don't know what to say in that case. I'll say this: Oz is intense. It's pretty raw. Orange Is the New Black, as much as I like it, doesn't reach that, at least in terms of violence and brutality. OITNB is lighter-toned, at least until the fourth season, then it takes a dark turn. Season 5 then ends on a pretty intense "Oh shit!" moment where you're wondering what's going to happen.

When dealing with prisoners, basically anything can happen. Anything. But the brutality isn't what I go for. It's the psychological aspect of it, what the characters go through, the crazy stuff they end up in, etc. The prison staff are just as bad as the prisoners. In both series.

It wasn't about violence and brutality, it just didn't feel much like it had advanced the story in the few second season episodes I watched. It felt like it was in a holding pattern.

It felt like it was in a holding pattern.

They're in prison. Of course they're being "held"! It's a holding pattern by definition. They can't go anywhere at all. Unless they're released or go out in a body bag. All they're stuck doing is time. And planning revenge on whoever slighted them, or seeing who they can get intimate with in the limited way they can, or what they can do to cover up whatever they might do inside so they don't get caught. In a prison series, things changing usually means the inmates will end up in a worse situation than before. Which is what they want to avoid.

On another note: I'm still looking forward to the season finale of Discovery. And nothing you say will change that. So cheers.

Oz is probably the only show I stopped watching because it terrified me. The promise of seeing Christopher Meloni's wang in the shower wasn't even enough to keep me watching,
Why his specifically?

Keller is nice. He doesn't disappoint. ;)

But Adebisi is ripped! And you know what they say: once you go black...

Adebisi and Said were my two favorite characters. And Oz used to be my favorite show, when I was in my early-20s. I couldn't get enough of it. Schillinger was someone you just loved to hate. He was truly sick.

Everything else, everything else pales in comparison in terms of intensity. So I can't bring myself to care whenever someone says "This is show is more this than Discovery! This show is more that than Discovery!" Please. Whatever it is they're talking about, I don't care. Nothing will ever beat Oz in the gruesome department or the graphic department. You can't beat the grittiness of underground late-'90s HBO. And with such short seasons: nothing will beat Oz in the fast-moving department. I don't care what you say. The one-up-man-ship is done. It was done before it started.

I don't need that thrill or that edge anymore. Where I'm at now: I prefer Orange Is the New Black. And Discovery too. Throw in Better Call Saul and you have my three favorite currently-running shows.

To be honest Meloni was the only person I could remember apart from the guy with the glasses and the nazi guy played J.K Simmons. Whilst I appreciate Simmons as an actor, i don't need to see him nekkid. Some things are better left unsaid.

Does anyone think that at some point a Discovery episode will have the title 'The Chimes at Midnight'....possibly the very last episode?

Just thinking about TUC, and Chang, and his quotes....
