Hit it!

The odds of a randomly chosen starship sized point in a galaxy being inside a star are very very low. It would certainly be less risky than the plan they are actually going with!
I wouldn't put it past control to develop its own spore drive though, the research must be somewhere.

That is a fair point. However, I still think jumping to an uncharted galaxy millions of light years would still require some sort of accuracy or awareness of where you're jumping to. But really the whole things boils down to a 'The eagles in the lord of the rings' situation. Yeah they could escape using the spore drive probably but, well there wouldn't be much of a story.

Also you're right about Control and the spore drive tech. No doubt, Section 31 would have been all over it and getting it threat assessed up the wazoo. Tilly was working on a 'dark matter interface' to navigate and chances are Control could be working on it's own version of that. Heck that might be how it manages to destroy all life in the galaxy, by giving spore drives to all of it's squid ships.

Things I loved this week:
Tilly and Poe, a wonderful pairing and Tilly finally got something to do again!
The planning scene with Georgiou rolling her eyes all the time and suggesting triggering a supernova. I lol'd.
The Enterprise. Oh my god I was nerdgasming. The bridge is perfect, the chair, the little helm viewer, the jelly bean buttons, the Turbolift handles, the railings. They did a great job.
Pike's departure
Jet agreeing to stay with the crystal

Stuff that I didn't love so much:
Sarek and Amanda just popping in and out hours quicker than section 31 just to say Hi.
The plan is a very Discovery plan. "It's the only way" only if you ignore a whole host of other ways. The autodestruct can't be the only way to destroy the ship. Fire hand phasers at the warp core. Set off a bomb on a shuttle. Be creative. Also, they don't even consider/explain away the obvious option of using the spore drive to go very very far away or into the spore realm. I appreciate they've set up a predestination paradox with the signals, but is time jumping the ship really the only option as presented?
This episode is half filled with maudlin goodbye scenes when we all know it's not going to be goodbye. Seems like wasted time and stalled the pacing of the main story.
The countdown clock behind Pike seemed a bit cheesy. A literal ticking clock is one of those things Discovery overuses. And it makes even less sense this time that they're all rushing, as they could just jump a bit further away and get more time. There's no reason given they have to stay where they are.

A good setup episode with some standout moments and a great new Enterprise, but lacking in its own story, I felt. Overall a 6.

The clock, seconds, even microseconds at this point, could make the difference between success and failure, is this really a good time for uniform straightening? That shit is for actual scuttle the ship and don't talk, either, fraking egocentric twonks. Has no one learned from Yamato?

And what could still be if the speculation about a Pike/Enterprise series comes true.

That idea is worthy of a mental orgasm if I've ever heard one. I would love it if that happened.

Peck had been cagey about future plans for Spock, and one of the set designers confirmed on Twitter that the Enterprise bridge is brand new/not a redress. We'll see what happens
I think the chances are pretty good especially with the Enterprise having its own purpose built bridge, they dont normally do that unless they know they are going to get a lot of use out of it.

I will be watching the episode later today.

So many thoughts here.......

OK so many things to say....... I loved it.

OMG I liked it

7.5/10 A fun episode

Episode 13 "Such Sweet Sorrow"

I didn't mind this week's episode at all.

I loved this episode a whole bunch. There was lots to see on screen, lots of eye candy. Loved the escape corridors that Discovery deployed to Enterprise, and watching that that was a really nice bit of kit that the ship has. So I gather most Federation ships have this as well including the Enterprise. Speaking of which OMG what a beautiful looking ship she was. I loved all the beauty shots of the Enterprise and such attention to detail. Both her and Discovery seem fairly comparable in size though the Enterprise is a lot taller then the Disco.

So the time crystal, did it change colour I could swear when they first got it it was green yet in this episode it's blue, not that that matters it's a minor nitpick but I noticed that right away. When Michael touched it she got a vision of NanoLeland boarding the ship and killing everyone, and a torpedo lodged in the hull of Enterprise. The same vision was seen by Reno when she opened up the cage holding the charger for the crystal.

Po was a fun addition here since they are at her homeworld Xahea. It was nice to see her and her reaction to Tilly which took everyone else in the transporter room by surprise but oh yes I loved seeing her again I liked her a lot in the Runaway episode.

I liked the rest of the crew deciding to stay back on the ship to help with Michael's plan. it feels a bit cliche but I didn't mind, I kind of had an idea something like that would have happened anyway. The final send off for Pike was good. I liked that.

I knew the self destruct wouldn't work, the sphere data just doesn't want to die which I keep thinking are we sure the data itself isn't some kind of intelligence, because it's merged with the Discovery and I'm almost certain that's how Zora happens because it's the data merged with the ship itself that becomes Zora...

OR........................... I had an idea.

OR. Maybe it's something else, something other, and it just hit me what that other could be. Po never left the ship and we never hear it confirmed either that she left the ship back to her homeworld. I'm wondering with her ability to do tech and general nature whether she has a part to play with the Zora thing and I'm thinking that maybe somewhere she is merged with the sphere data and Discovery or does something to help that along because even Tilly has no idea where her friend has gone or that's the impression I got that everyone was so busy with their work. We never see either of them much aside from the scene of all the big goodbyes. I'm a sentimental old fart and really did like that scene where everyone was dictating their letters home to say goodbye. I like stuff like that.

I did like Georgiou making an appearance again and loved how she reacted to the colour scheme of the Enterprise bridge. That reaction was funny. Loved her little Mirror Universe comment as Pike beams out.

I'm not a huge fan of cliffhanger endings so when the episode ended like that with the big enemy fleet arriving I got a bit antsy and restless. I can't wait for the final episode now.

Xahea is a weird looking planet. What's with those tentacle things wrapped around the planet? I do wonder if they serve some kind of purpose. It would be fun if they come alive and are used for planetary defense. I can only imagine what they'd do to a ship so hey maybe they help in the fight with the Section 31 ships. Who knows?

Anyway another fun episode and I enjoyed it lots.

Haven't watched it yet (was too busy playing Stellaris), but I'm encouraged by the poll results so far.

Great episode. Poor execution by CBSAA. They should have aired both parts together. 10-1 ( for shitty scheduling)

The Enterprise looked great. I wish they spent more time showing the ships. Awkward shit such as #1 saying no holographic comms ever and the Georgiou / Pike exchange were weird. I don't really get the purpose.

true. but generally deadline doesn’t print rumors or misinformation, it’s one of the major trade publications in hollywood. if the reporting were inaccurate, CBS would’ve put out a correction. i suspect they wanted the story out there, either because it’s true or because it cutely obfuscates their larger plans.

If the Pike series rumours are true, then the Deadline report is still accurate as Pike and Number 1 won't be on Discovery next year... they would be on their own show. Also, Ethan Peck has been more secretive regarding whether he will be on the show next year or not. I suspect that's because as of the end of this episode he's choosing to remain on Discovery. I fully expect him to end up on the Enterprise some time during the next episode, but they probably want to keep this secret for now.

Also, there's the issue of the leaked Spock picture with Peck in full Enterprise uniform with no beard and no shaggy hair. My theory is this is a publicity photo that will be released with the Pike series announcement. We'll see...

3.

That was incredibly tedious to watch.

Ditto. Just felt like a big tease with a lot of padding and no pay off. I hate episodes like this that are finding ways to fill in time just to end on a cliffhanger for the next episode where the shit actually takes place.

Please, please let this be an end to Burnham/Tyler. Nothing about their 'relationship' ever felt genuine and referring back to it is really getting tiresome. I had to look away as she turned back around for one last embrace/snog.

The Enterprise bridge. Thumbs up *expect* for the classic red/yellow/green lights circling the top of the bridge interior. It stood out like a sore thumb and was my only real complaint about the set. It would've been preferable to incorporate them more naturally or drop them completely.

Given the stretched out set-up for next week, I've got pretty high expectations. Surprise me in a good way! I can only speak for myself, but to retain my interest they really need to knock it out of the ballpark and chart a bold new course for the series.

Metric units for TOS era confirmed.

Suck it up with your "nautical miles" Scotty!

They missed a perfectly good opportunity when Burnham told Sarek "you took me in even though you already had a son" instead of "you took me in even though you already had sons".

It would have been such a subtle line that Discovery wouldn't have gotten in trouble with the movie rights folks.

We needed at least a passing mention of Sybok.

She was talking to both Sarek and Amanda, why would she talk about Sarek's kid from another marriage in that context? Also there is nothing barring them mentioning things in the movies. If there was any line drawn it would be in actually using the character.

Great episode. Poor execution by CBSAA. They should have aired both parts together. 10-1 ( for shitty scheduling).
What they could have done was have only 13 episodes and fit the (almost) nothing that happened in this episode into part of the 12th and part of the final episodes.

Awkward shit such as #1 saying no holographic comms ever
Well, Pike made a specific point in Brother to say that he hates holocommunicators and wanted them all torn out of the Enterprise, so maybe he asked someone right before returning something like "did you all take my complaint of the holocommunicators seriously?"

Two-dimensional thinking. Hardly surrounded.

More work for Eaglemoss sculptors ahead...
In tactical situations like that the enemy is just as likely to hit its own ships and they are too close together for Torpedoes to be effective.

I learned that in a Bugs Bunny cartoon, I also learned to be aware of what season it is at all times and that Daffys Beak can spin around his head and fall off.

The Burnham haters are going to vomit in their boots after seeing this one.

Anyone who predicted Burnham is the Red Angel is going to throw a validation party.
I suspected as much and said so at the time, especially after hearing her mother say she wasnt responsible for the 7 Red Anomalies and that line about the suit being coded to her dna, I thought it was a sure bet at that point

All the Enterprise interiors were just spot-frigging-on.

I have to admit........it would be a horrendous waste if these two episodes are all we see of her.

With the amount of attention to detail they put in that awesome set, I strongly suspect that a Pike series is a go!
I will be very surprised if CBS passes up the opportunity to lead in to a full Pike/Enterprise series.

Not surprised CBS are keeping quiet about it though, its also dependant on whether or not Mount, Peck and Romjin-Stamos want to do it.

They built a whole new set just for the Enterprise bridge, that is a good sign.
