Makes sense that a pitcher would say that.

During the Pirates' coverage of the fracas, the color guy - don't know his name, but he said he was a pitcher - said that even though he doesn't care about bat flips or celebrations or anything like that, he knows he's in the minority.

Bob Moose is the Pirates' color guy. Damn fine pitcher in his day. I think he was a World Series MVP back in the 70's.

Correction - Steve Blass was who I was thinking of as World Series MVP - though he didn't win it. He had 2 wins and a no-decision in the '71 series with a 1.00 ERA. Roberto Clemente won the MVP that year. Moose and Blass were both good pitchers whose careers ended early due to injury. Moose is the color commentator.

Hell, I was a pitcher until my knee exploded near the end of my senior year of high school, and even though both our head coach and our pitching coach were advocates of throwing at guys' heads (and they had a reputation in the IHSA for it), I never did it, and I didn't give a flying fuck if someone took me deep and pimped their shot; my takeway was that I'd just try and get them out the next time around.

I only intentionally plunked a guy once, but I aimed for his back and it was a changeup that barely broke 70. After the umpire ran me for what was a blatantly obvious beaning (I'd hated this guy for years), Coach Bonebrake--my hand to God, that was his name--took me aside and said, "God fucking damn it, Tim, if you're going to hit a guy, you hit him with everything you have, none of that soft-pitch bullshit." Then and there I realized that retaliation is one of the most moronic things in baseball. A pitcher clowns you? Take him deep. A batter takes you deep? Clown him in the next at-bat.

IHSA? Where'd you go to high school?

The Cubs had a helluva 7th inning stretch lineup for the home opener. Lee Smith, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, Andre Dawson & Ryne Sandberg.

El Mago strikes again.
