I am especially skeptical of this given nobody shares numbers and the show was aired on cable television in Canada.

It's not ratings. It's demand expressions.

So I guess the third season is still happening.

The streaming battle is going to be interesting to watch with some big companies joining it soon (Disney, Apple, Comcast/NBCUniversal). Cord cutters who dropped their cable service to save money will be hesitant to spend too much on this. CBS was clever to establish a foothold in this market before the additional big hitters come to the plate, and they are counting on Star Trek to keep them competitive.

Keep on telling yourself that. I would trust the numbers from Parrott Analytics long before I would trust the clickbait propaganda whores at Midnight's Edgelord or Doomcuck.

So what I’m gathering from what I’m reading the demand expression idea is that even if you mention it or *gasp* produce or even watch a negative video on something you dislike, it counts.

Haters, I’m not sure how to tell you this, but you might actually be helping the evil “STD.”

There's no such thing as bad publicity.

I think someone needs to let Midnight’s Edge in on the secret.

All the continuity errors and whatnot are intentional. They're making wage from pissed-off fanboys!

This is a market where you can watch all you need to in one month, and then go on to another streamer the next month and then catch up with whatever individual streamer has when they've created enough content for you to fill a month watching. The situation with streaming services is, at least at this point, absolutely nothing like cable.

What does that matter? If someone's hate-watching, they're still watching. In fact, they're usually watching more intently than casual viewers.

Does creative participation mean fanfic and fanart?

Exactly, they don't care what people think about it, as long as they're watching and discussing so others watch.
This is key to why these numbers matter:
Even if they're meaningless nonsense (like most numerical performance indicators already are), if CBS are basing decision making on them, it's good for Discovery.
