Are there any moderately competent books about Trek in the 1970's out there?

I'm not aware of any scholarly research work thta covers the same ground as the latest Cushman book.

Contemporary publications that give a sense of what was going on include the books Star Trek Lives! and Making of the Trek Conventions. To find many magazine articles (from Starlog etc.) go to http://mystartrekscrapbook.blogspot.com/ and Internet Archive. There's a paucity of factual info about the 70s in part because it was the era of not-made Trek projects, and few outside Roddenberry and a handful of people developing those had much exposure to what was going on. Few documents remain that I've ever seen.

FWIW, I've asked Larry Nemecek before whether he'll cover any PotT materials on his Trek Files series. He said it's possible, they just have to figure out how to present it on the podcast.

Also, I should note other publications giving a feel of 70s Trek fandom include the books Letters to Star Trek (filled with Roddenberry worship, though) and the Star Trek Catalog, and the short lived magazine All About Star Trek Fan Clubs.

I don't know anyone who does. I do have a treatment for the film though.

There's an old thread here called Planet of the Titans Revisited (link) where I put stuff up over several years. A number of sites that discuss the film took stuff from it.

It would have been nice to see the Titans Enterprise done as a large model, by the same folks who built the Star Destroyer
