What would you use the holodeck for?

I would not use it for porn. Porn is for beta males.

The question of whether free will exists is similar to the question of whether a die roll is truly random.
The result of the die roll is based on physics, it depends exactly how you threw it.
But from your perspective, it's random. You do not have knowledge of how you are holding the die, or the effect of the specific way you throw it. So even though from the time it leaves your hand, there is a 100% chance it will land on a 2, from your knowledge base, there is a 1/6 chance of every result.
It's the same with human decisions. They are the result of electric impulses in your brain. From the universe's perspective, they are determined, but from your perspective, you have control. Human perspective is how we imagine the universe, why would we reject it now in this one particular case? Our value system is based on human decisions, and from human perspective, they are up to us.

I am not sure I'd be comfortable having sex with a hologram. I'd be too wary of the many things that could happen, like the hologram changing to something else for example and sectioning my... you know what... Like that movie where Tom Cruise is getting a blow job in a moving car (suggested not seen of course)... What if the car got in a fender-bender... ouch!!!
For me it's more the risk of Reg Barclay stumbling into a scene he really shouldn't lay his eyes on. He is a capable engineer, he could override even weird and obscure security locking codes.....
Maybe for stuff that other wise would be too dangerous (injury of death) in real life; safety guards would save me.

I wouldn't judge someone, maybe a nice shy person, who, for whatever reason, feels compelled to have sex with a blow up sex doll. We're basically talking about the same thing here, and the increased sophistication of the human replica doesn't change that. The only thing I have a problem with is if this is being "mainstreamed", as if sex is naturally a thing you do to something for your own benefit only, as opposed to something human beings do with each other, for each other. When I see reactions here of "Why not?" I wonder if this attitude is the "new normal"...

I don't know if it has to anything to do with desperation. People tend to grow old and become less performant and less appealing... Sometimes it must be a nice break to have sex with something/someone that will not judge you and, not be resentful, not tell others (by vengeance) about how bad you were a certain night. I guess it's why people go see prostitutes. It's to get that kind of comfort. Plus as I said when you get old you are not only less appealing but you also only appeal to people that are less appealing to you. In light of that, holograms don't seem like desperation, they seem like heaven!!! I could also tell you a thing or two about friends of mine who are amputated of half their revenues by alimony pensions who wish they did have sex with holograms instead!!
People used to say that about computer games: "It's better to play card games or board games with real people... etc.."
Now you have parents who are more into computer games than their children sometimes!
People get used to new things and then it's no longer a problem anymore.
