Captain Burnham and Stamets' new job

Thefallguy

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I was wondering for some time, what they would do with Stamets, when they finally mothball the spore drive, as his current job would be gone.

When I read today, that Anson Mount is (unsurprisingly) not in season 3, I had an idea:

Obviously, the goal of the show is to put Burnham in the Captains chair at some point. This was stated in the very beginning, by then showrunner Bryan Fuller, that we would see her "rise through the ranks".

That would give Stamets the opportunity, to become the ships new science officer. Alternatively, they could first make Saru Captain, Burnham becomes No.1 and also, Stamets becoming Discoverys Science officer.

What do you think about that? Or do you think, they'd drop DJ Stamets, when the disc ain't spinning anymore?

Just make her captain.

She would suite that role more than she currently does now.

I don't think Fuller's plans have any bearing now, honestly. They diverged off the course before he was out the door. Saru now has seniority over Burnham anyway, if they were going to promote from inside the crew (bad idea) and he's shown pretty good leadership qualities, whereas Burnham is still a work in progress. She's still dealing with more issues than a magazine subscription.

If they're going to go with someone who's already connected to the show and it isn't Saru, I think it could be Number One, Prime Lorca, Cornwell or Nhan.

I suspect Captain Burnham will be the show's final scene, like Clark Kent becoming Superman in Smallville.

I could see them doing a temporary demotion and putting Admiral Cornwell in charge (*cringe*) or bringing in ReguLorca and making him captain.

Failing that, Balls of Steel Saru. The first captain in Trek who can shoot darts fron his head when sufficiently angry.

And more hangups than a telemarketing firm.

I figure it will be another Captain from outside the ship. Maybe whoever was on Vulcan will still be available.

It would be fun to at least once just have a non-sequitur of some uniform sleeve holding a coffee mug, tapping fingers, checking the time occasionally, every once in awhile as busy life of Vulcan is seen outside of a shuttle port window.

I can see it now.. a vision of Red Obtuse Angles

Season Seven will by one long never ending Burnham Sermon, the longest captain's chair acceptance speech in the history of starfleet. Season Seven will be the 'God Emperor of Dune' of Star Trek. Her insights into the nature of everything will baffle fans, theoretical physicists, and quantum philatelists for years while only the true completionist will watch the entirety just for bragging rights at Con Panels. Religions will rise and fall and civilizations will turn to this new Dao De Ching for as long as the Earth supports life, which underwhelmingly will be in 2029 when 9942 Apophis is nudged a little closer than predicted and wipes out all life on said planet. Sorry, spoilers.

At the end Burnham will shrug, decline the captaincy as she realizes she had always been a captain deep in her heart, peel off a rubber mask to reveal she is Sybok as Tyler looks both confused and shrugs to Culber who is holding his hand. SyBurnham then walks away with The Traveller who quietly explains his registered offender status as they both go boldly into an uncertain future.

I agree. She already carries the burden of feeling that she needs to solve every problem she sees arise. That would work better (both in reality and from a story-telling standpoint) if she were captain and had a crew to whom she could delegate those solutions, rather than feeling she must do it all by herself without any support.

From a storytelling perspective, that would get the rest of the crew involved as a team solving problems, with Burnham as Captain still able to carry the burden of feeling she needs to solve those problems. The difference is she would have tools (the crew) at her disposal to carry that out.

Stamets will be the obvious choice of Science Officer under Captain Saru, and First Officer Burnham.
Saru will either get killed off or become such a pain in the arse that he'll get demoted.
I'm making this up as I go along.

I think CBS are also making it up as they go, or at least rethinking their direction every season.

I think that between Burhnam uncovering the introspection she requires to understand and heal herself from her PTSD, guilt and savior complex and Stamets exploring more deeply the empathy that he had gained from the Mycenial network to heal Culber will be duking it out to become the first Counselors on a Star Fleet vessel.

They will however be beaten out for the job by Saru who's inherent empathy and kindness has already trumped anything either of them are capable of achieving.
