Captain Marvel (2019)

I googled "Captain marvel" and "I AM FEMALE" and the first results are the ranting of someone who is saying that the nazi-feminists have taken over Hollywood and now they want to push their misandric agenda.

Well, it's literally what he said...

"He's" a she and also nothing was mentioned for the reasons this poster thinks TLJ sucked.

Wonderwoman didn't have an agenda, it was a great movie and that's all it tried or claimed to be

Captain marvel is being pushed as a breaking the glass ceiling landmark moment in cinematic history, breaking free from the shackles of the patriarchy, and rising up to say, for the very first time "I am FEMALE"

It isn't, it's just a standard movie with a female lead, it's not the first anything.

Well it is the first female led Marvel movie so that means it's not just a standard movie. Granted you add that to marketing then it kind of makes sense to promote the movie that way. It connects back the main agenda already mentioned of making money.

Yet they are not promoting it that way, so you're arguing a strawman.

Tip toes in for a comment about TLJ... prefaces it with a declaration that I am a female poster...qualifies my femaleness as not being an all inclusive representation for my whole gender... but I didn't like TLJ because Luke got shafted. Worse than that he's dead Jim, as much as a Jedi can be that is.

At this point, I think that the Captain Marvel box office has proven these boycotts and troll tactics to be worthless and retroactively shows us that it probably wasn't these guys that made Solo flop.

They aren't worthless. Check out how many subscribers a person has and how many likes they get on their Youtube channel. Not even these people are dumb enough to not know a Marvel movie is not going to make major money. It's not just about fans ranting. It's about self promotion and making money and getting noticed as well. I mean that is kind of the point of clickbait stuff. Everything has to become more and more extreme where you got to keep toping yourself to not only keep people tuning in but also keep people watching your channel instead of the their guy.

So you guys don't think the marketing or buzz or even the over one hundred pages of this thread have not been sensitive to the 'femaleness' of the main character of the movie? In the marketing here and I only saw the TV stuff it was like the word 'Hero' was split to be... wait for it, this is cleverness and really blatant signalling... but it was 'Her' 'o'. I mean one is not criticising the genius who cooked that up however the business has sold us some of the controversy by playing on it. For everyone who chooses to look for sexist reaction you will find it even when it is not there but the bottom line is ticket sales.

Err, Yes? Why not?
Alright.

Honestly, I'm not sure how to categorize MCU superhero films. First of all, they don't all fit the same mold. They all share qualities of popcorn movies, but some of them manage to rise above that.

Besides Captain Marvel, I think both Winter Soldier and Black Panther also rose above it by having additional layers beyond just those needed for popcorn entertainment.

On the other hand, Dark World is an example of one that I found no virtues in besides pure popcorn. And, even though I think it's really good, I have a hard time seeing First Avenger as more than a popcorn film.

I thought Infinity War was more than popcorn entertainment, because I actually felt something afterwards that stayed with me long after the film was over. It felt exactly like I'd been to a funeral for a loved one. On the other hand, others think it was pure popcorn, mass-produced eye candy; many shrug the ending off and discuss a reset as inevitable . Obviously some of this is subjective.

I think perhaps blockbuster is a descriptive term that will prove to apply to Captain Marvel. As a term it's completely neutral as to artistic merit or lack thereof.

I'm open to better terms....

The sexist reaction is most certainly there. You don't have to look for it. The RT "want to see" score for CM was a tiny 38%. That's one of the lowest of any movie. Then the movie opens to huge numbers. Doesn't add up. Definitely some sexist bombing going on.

One of the reasons why Black Panther hit such box office numbers is because they also appealed to African Americans, hoping to get those in that group who might not normally see an MCU movie. They are doing the same with Captain Marvel and women. Why would a business want to leave money on the table?

Appealing to audiences is a far cry than “glass ceiling cinematic moment in history.” Which is hyperbole.

^At least CM didn't do the 'Doctor Who' in your face (actual glass ceiling shattering)... like they did in the trailer for Jodie Whittaker. That was patronising.

Solo flopped because the last Jedi sucked, it was an awful mess of a film and torpedoed the goodwill from TFA and the excellent Rouge squadron.

Captain marvel was a decent enough movie for what it was, and was coming off the back of infinity war which was amazing

Why the hell would it flop?
The hatred of TLJ isn't as strong as some would like to believe. Those are a few isolated people amplified by the internet and delusion. It's pretty much agreed that Solo failed because of the timing of the release, a failed marketing campaign and just lack of interest to see a movie about young Han Solo without Harrison Ford. But that's from financial experts, not online randos pushing a confusing agenda. Not everyone is in the anti-TLJ echo chamber, hell the majority of the population is barely aware of it. People are excited for any news on Episode IX, funny how that works. It's probably going to be a huge hit.

I wasn’t a huge fan of that. Mostly because the track they used had played out. And the glass shattering—while factually correct—was on the nose and the least creative choice they could’ve made.

I appreciate the celebration for what it was—truly a new era for Who—But the spot was lame.
