THE ORVILLE S2, E8: "IDENTITY, PART I"

I'd say the more likely scenario is that we would see the characters playing Star Wars in the holodeck. Maybe something tied in with the new movies so they can net an actor for a cameo.
In their "Environmental Simulator"? Hmm. We saw them viewing an episode of, "Seinfeld", and no one questioned the authenticity of it. Perhaps because the Earthling Humans still talk like that?

But it did make me curious about how would they react to Science-Fiction movies. Some characters in, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", despite living in a world in which Magic is real, et cetera, still had fun playing a table-top Fantasy RPG. But in, "Star Trek: Voyager", the only SF they simulated was their version of, "Flash Gordon", or, "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century". That technology level didn't match theirs, even though it inspired TP to put quaint controls aboard his, "Delta Flyer".

So my question then is, would "The Orville" characters be able to have fun simulating fictional story characters that more or less have the same technology levels? Would some characters have to be told that those aren't documentaries, as in "Galaxy Quest"?
The "Millenium Falcon", can be spotted in combat, in some battle scenes, in one of the "Star Trek" movies or episodes. But rather than think of it as a legitimate crossover, you could imagine a wealthy eccentric person, who is a fan or historian or an experimental aviation buff, or whatever, being inspired to build it, just to see if it would work.

But then in the process, realising that he or she can't duplicate the technology exactly. Perhaps even for safety compliance regulations' sake.

Thanks for the thought provoking post!

Generally they're repetitious and trivial. Worth about a minute or two of screen time - which is about all that the Orville's battles with the Krill have amounted to.

I could imagine the helmsman saying, "Stop shooting at us! You did that already! Try something new. You're boring us!", but I have seen the episodes already, and he didn't do that.

But that would be funny. Too bad it didn't happen in the "Family Guy" parodies of the "Star Wars" movies.

Once I saw that first smaller (though still large) pile I thought, "Oh, okay. That's bad, but I kinda expected bigger." Then the bigger reveal happened and I was floored. Two weeks ago I thought this show was a shitty half-hour Seth MacFarlane sitcom. Then, after watching the first three episodes of Season 2 out of curiosity on Hulu, I was blown away and binged the whole series.

They more than deserve their Saturn Award, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if they end up with a Hugo nomination at some point. Maybe then people (like myself two weeks ago) will realize that that shitty sitcom they don't want to watch is actually an amazing hour-long dramedy. The FOX marketing department did these guys dirty.

I hope it works out too. Though I never understood the false impressions to begin with. I still view "Family Guy", but I lost track of, "American Dad".
Awesome episode!

Why is Issac's the only one with blue/whiteish eyes???

The Orville is making it harder for me to rewatch any Trek....

Only two gripes

1. How the heck did people leaving the Orville didn't raise any alarms...?

2. What would the Kaylons done if Ed didn't get the permission to take the Orville to the Kaylon homeworld?? The admiralty could have ordered Ed to take Issac's body to the Orville-verse version of the Daystrom Institute where they could dissect Issac...

He was built for his scouting/spy mission. He wasn't one of the originals built with the red glow.

Would they give Norm Macdonald credit if Yaphit just appears and doesn't talk? Doesn't seem right.

Hello! Hmm. According to an episode commentary for "Angel", the creator of the character, "Dennis the Ghost", only got residuals when he wasn't played by special effects, but by a person, per guild rules. She wasn't happy about it.

Actor John deLancie was asked if he got paid an hourly wage. He answered that his contract had him paid per episode plus residuals. But he didn't clarify if that included being paid for his time too, for if he was called, but not used, or edited out.

I hope that helps.

They never said this.

The real-world reason is to let us know which one is Issac quickly. The in-universe is pretty much up to speculation.

^^I thought they said Issac was built after the genicide was comminted on the original builders, so he was not part of the robot who commited the genicide.......or did i pick that up wrong?

You are correct on this point. But nothing was said explicitly about his blue elements.

As a guest actor? Paid for the appearance, and residuals. If he's hired, he's paid.

You got it right. Isaac was built afterward, for reconnaissance if nothing else. Being built afterward was a stroke of brilliance, it exonerates Isaac from the viciousness - guilt by association is a bit 1600s - along with Mercer's taking responsibility for Isaac, made for a solid ending.

Ovation is also right, there is - so far - zero on-screen explanation for his blue adornments, whereas all the others have red, orange, or yellow. No green clovers or purple horseshoes to be found. But how often do Kaylon toasters need to build and send out reconnaissance units? If color is used as ranking or purpose designation, blue = reconnaissance.

It's got to be that.

Or they ran out of red light bulbs.

That may still be the case....

I hope so. The fact that "We will kill all biologics" followed by a big reveal of giant weapons ships that easily destroyed Union and Krill ships makes the need of "We need to keep you alive just so you can fool Earth into lowering defenses before we kill you anyway" was surprisingly weak, as was the attempt at the verbal code message - Isaac would know all those possible tactics and more to begin with. (The piggybacking a communications signal to get an alert through made far more sense in of itself and would have been a lot more cool if Ed didn't try to tell the other guy "34 gun salute" and everyone thinks all is well but in comes a strange signal and woomp there it is...) But this is the same show that gets Ed to tell Teleya "Oh, I gave you decoys that would reveal half-baked information. Don't tell anyone since we might need to use that trick again." And I tele ya, I suspect that's going to be followed up on before the Kaylons return. At least the Ed/Teleya episode didn't feel overly jam packed and rushed the way Identity pt 2 had.
