And the last two or three seasons were only six episodes a piece.

That's great. Although I won't hold my breath on the movie. Last time they tried that it killed the show for a decade.

Agreed, they need to forget about the movie. They got so stuck on that before that it prevented :*anything* from happening--no series no nothing because they thought a movie would be made.

Exactly. I think they should stick with their TV series. The format is set up for that anyhow. It just works better as a tv sitcom

Every series except VII & VIII (8 episodes) and BtE (3) were six episodes. For the most part it's been quality over quantity.

As far as the recent series', X was better than XI & XIII, but they all had their moments.

I'm still hoping for a reunion with the cat race. The blue ark might have survived flying straight into an asteroid, but at the very least the red ark should have ended up somewhere. Cat might be able to get his end away properly.

    100% Agree.

And, I just don't see their current format working for a blockbuster movie. I'd imagine they'd need to change it. IIRC (and I might not) there was talks or rebooting or something like that the last time they considered a movie.

Yep, that seems to be a loose end that's begging to be followed up on!

RD is full of loose ends.

I have to disagree about season ten -- I think the last two or three seasons have been the best of the show in years, since it's hay day. Not as good as the hay day, but good enough to where I want to keep watching.

I am, however, still disappointed -- as I expressed in another thread here -- that there are no arcs, deeper character moments like from earlier seasons, and that they appear to be going nowhere. The original goal was to set a course to Earth and get back if they can. The actors aren't getting any younger and the show will need resolution eventually.

I have to disagree on one point, in series 10 there was an overall Arc regarding rimmer and his father which brought resolution at the end. It started with his brother and ended with his father. I have to watch series 11 and 12 again to determine the arc for the story there I've only seen them once

Yes, it's definitely filled with loose ends. Let me rephrase--that's a loose end that I'd really like to see followed up on. Not terrible if they don't but fun if they do.

I too like the last several seasons have been great. Perhaps not quite at the heights of the series from 2-5 but really good.

The point of the series is that they are going nowhere. That's got to be depressing. Lister is the only surviving human. No women. Not a good scenario. It really leads to the slovenly lifestyle we see. I think that angle is well portrayed. RD just isn't the type of show to have ongoing arcs. Where do arcs fit in with a universe and life that is meaningless? It's about survival, and that's portrayed comedically.

Although, despite that, they've had some themes carry through.

As for returning to Earth, whatever they show is bound to be disappointing. In fact, they had plans to return to Earth at some point and it didn't happen . . . fortunately. The description of it sounded like a terrible way to end the series! I'm sure that's floating around somewhere.

IIRC, the movie was going to reboot the continuity but keep the TV cast. That's why they recast Kochanski in Series VII, because they wanted a more conventionally attractive leading lady to help sell the film to American producers.

I think that doing a big budget movie version of Red Dwarf for a mass audience at this stage is a doomed idea. It's a cult show for the fans and that's how it should stay.

Or they'll try to do a reboot, once the iconic TV series cast officially quit.

The show should be what it wants to be and with some unique personality and uniqueness instead of inane nostalgic brand peddle pandering for cheap ratings for mass audiences that aren't going to care for when the next shiny pet rock arrives with new hat accessory. It was int he right place and right time to have gotten its audience in the first place. And since it's impossible to patent lightning in a bottle... having a show with character in the writing and acting sorta helps.

That's what Doug Naylor wanted but IIRC, most of the production companies that showed any interest in financing it wanted to recast with big names, which wasn't a concession he wanted to make.
