A new fan film from the makers of Ghost Ship: They have also released a video explaining that their series of fan films is set in their own universe called the Avalon universe. It's not the prime universe or kelvin universe, but maybe is somewhere in between.
Thanks for posting this Star Trek fanfilm . The risk Starfleet Captain's take and how dangerous space travel can be was portrayed well when they have an emergency.I really liked the acting. This is a really good film.
Just checked this out. Impressive debut. I liked the lighting, the costuming, the production design for the most part. I really liked the use of the Beyond-style uniforms here. The acting wasn't super great, but still, overall, I had few complaints. A very solid fan film. Look forward to seeing more of the Avalon universe.
Is this a debut? I thought the Ghost Ship space-zombie one was the debut. It certainly had most of the same cast. Mind you, that one also ended with a (non) surprise of a Captain being assigned to a new ship.
Exceptional work. I did think that the fellow who played Lance Ramirez with the weakest actor of the bunch, but it wasn't because his acting was bad for a fan film so much as the fact that the others were just really good actors and it's hard to shine in that kind of environment. Good Sets. Good Lighting. Decent writing. (Although I'm a little concerned about the rampant alcoholism.) And the kind of special effects you'd expect from a Trekyards veteran. All around good fan film and one I would recommend. Minor nitpick: The Connie at the end of the credits doesn't have the additional photon torpedo tubes. Oops.
Plus side: Pretty well photographed and edited. The interview and flashbacks worked well. Most of the cast is fine Minuses: Of the cast the lead and the engineer on the shuttle are the weakest performers The AND THEN problem where things just happen because they happen and no decision by any of the leads triggers it Believability issues abound: the Starbase has a tractor beam but requires them to get manual control before they can use it...um, what? Just use it to change the trajectory of the shuttle. And have they no weapons they could use to deflect/destroy the shuttle after everyone beamed out? The reluctant captain assigned to a ship...again. How about someone steps up instead of being assigned? That'd be novel.
You rang? I enjoyed this. I like that the producers are trying to be a little more modern in tone and style. As is often the case, I agree with our critique. I still enjoyed it though and look forward to seeing where they go next. One thing I really liked was the way they managed to redress contemporary locations using darkness and computer displays. I thought that worked pretty well. I need to figure out how to do that!
Yeah, she doesn't get as much screen time in this film as she did in Ghost Ship, so I didn't realize how bad she was until I saw that. Oddly, Avalon LOST seems to retcon the very end of Ghost Ship. Did they decide to change direction after the first film was completed? I thought that was an effective technique as well.
They did this in ST6 at Starfleet and STID in the Vengeance bay where Scotty opens the airlock. The trick is to put enough light on the stuff you want to see and then adjust the exposure to make everything else falls into heavy shadow. It helps to minimize reflective or light colored surfaces near the things you don't want to see. Black curtains on the walls also helps. I did something like that in this video from a few years back (link), which was shot in a garage, shooting against black stage curtains.

Watch the briefing scene at Starfleet HQ ("ladies and gentlemen, the c in c") - it's the Auditorium of the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood and nearly everything you see is a contemporary commercially available item (the desk lamps are still occasionally available on eBay). The way it's lit and dressed expertly draws the eye to what is intended to be the focus and you don't come away with the feeling that you've just watched some Star Trek cosplayers in a modern business meeting room.
A nice little film, though not as good as Ghost Ship. As others say, the "reluctant captain" trope is a bit overused. I love that they're in their own continuity, and hope it means future tales can go in crazy new directions. Minor nitpick: Those torpedo launchers look so high up, I'm wondering if torpedoes would hit the lower dome on the saucer
Should this become the Avalon Universe thread instead of separate threads for each film? The reason I ask is that they posted a video saying some things changed financially with the requirements necessary for filming over at the STC sets in Kingsland, GA (no accusations or anything but rather just something they couldn't plan for last minute). Does anyone in the fan film community know what changed? I think I remember seeing previously a $500 refundable security deposit whereas now it is a $200 NON-refundable one plus a request for (additional?) donation. I think that's reasonable but was just curious if there are other changes.
