THE ORVILLE S2, E7: "DEFLECTORS"

It's an internal cultural matter. It was said in the episode that Moclas was a very harsh planet and the Moclans have only managed to survive by following strict cultural rules. They don't want inflict them on other species but mearly want ensure Moclans are still around in the 26th century.

I think it's also important to see this from the Moclan perspective. The Union is very different from the Krill. They are probably more like NATO to the Moclans while other Union planets are like a ethical alliance. For the Molcans they get an economic boon and security.

It's also an interesting rebuttal to the somewhat anti-theist stance of the show (I say somewhat) in the fact the Moclans are every bit as repressive as a theocracy but are secular so it hasn't changed. You don't "outgrow" ideology that doesn't make sense.

The one thing I liked about the episode was Mercer's comment about how long the Maklins could be allies with such different values. That feels like a comment on the Federation's relationship with the Klingons. Or even China.

How can you really claim to have values of inclusiveness when you cozy up to governments that oppress anyone who doesn't fit a particular mold?

Because Kelly is a strong woman so she doesn't have to run to the authorities going "waa waaa waaaa"
When someone breaks into the quarters of the ship's XO, or arranges to have someone break into that, having those people dealt with and punished is hardly a weakness or "running to the authorities going waa waa waaaa." If someone broke into your home would you not call the police, or do you consider yourself too strong to do that?

The Flower got into her quarters to convince her to go back to his friend.
She knew that the Flower wasn't there to kill her or worse.
He may have been annoying but he was just showing concern for his friend.
Not really something she need to be afraid of.

Right, so if you broke into someone's home for the purpose of convincing them to get back together with a friend of your they had just broken up with, and they called the police and had you arrested and charged, you would argue at your trial that you weren't there to hurt or kill them so you should be set free, because you're nothing to be afraid of? I'm curious how that would turn out. Hint, it won't.

But again, is it not on Kelly to make the first move to "call the police" then?

From everything we see, Kelly is more annoyed than outright worried by what Cassius is doing. If she wants to call the police, she's more than capable of doing so.

As I said before, she's not a damsel-in-distress here, and there's nothing preventing her from escalating the matter if and when she feels it needs to be escalated.

It's not "she needs saving" it's "this guy is acting out of line."

Send and endless series of unreplied to texts to an woman who broke up with you and there's a good chance the police will come knocking on your door. To speak nothing of breaking into her home to leave behind a "gift" in the form of a living creature.

This is what I think happened on Moclus 2 thousand years ago.

The division of gender was similar to human, half and half.

Environmental issues sterilized the women.

Genetic modification allowed men to lay eggs, without help from women. But do the men mix genetic material with other men to lay eggs?

In the beginning, Men and women are still predisposed to fall in love and live together till they die without producing children, wasting resources that could otherwise be put into a fertile pair of men making eggs, which would be fine, if it wasn't %75 of the population who are being difficult about turning gay for the greater good.

Moral/legal guidelines, on pain of death, have to be invented, to stop fertile men from wasting their time, and endangering population levels, living happily ever after with barren women.

Men are further genetically modified, so that no (very few) women are then born at all into each generation for a backwards thinking sperm wasting Man to be criminally immoral with.

Then FTL is invented.

Space is full of fertile women who may be genetically compatible with Moclans.

If it's a question of racial purity, can a Moclan boy and a non Moclan boy make an egg together? They have to fuck outside their species to fuck outside their gender, but there is still a lot of alien dick waiting out there in space to sit on, which may or may not be outside the rules.

We saw Bortus' porn.

No aliens?

All Moclan?

But the police come knocking because the woman calls them.

Kelly didn't do anything to indicate she wanted intervention. Besides, she's first officer of the ship; I'm pretty sure if she wanted action taken, she was more than capable of doing so.

I don't see the problem here. Should Ed or Talla have simply assumed they knew what was best for Kelly and acted preemptively?

See the above comment.
For all of you Forward Thinkers
You sure do think women Need Saving.
Okay, fine. We'll play it your way. Kelly's a tough woman who doesn't need a man to protect her. A statement which is true on its own, but anyway. So her ex is being creepy sending hundreds of text messages and arranging to have a friend break into her quarters. Why doesn't she exercise her authority as XO of the ship and penalize Cassius for violating regulations which even civilian contractors like himself are required to follow? Or assuming that isn't tough enough by your standards, why does she not beat the shit out of the flower when she finds it in her quarters, and then proceed to beat the shit out of Cassius for not having any decency?

Or are you still going to claim this post is somehow sexist?

Because she didn't feel there was a need to, yet?

And in the end, barring future developments, she seems to have had the right of it.
