Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

I'm also involved in the arts. I know musicians and I work on independent films. Very independent. I'm about as far from Hollywood as you could possibly get. But that's also lent itself to my getting to know actors who came up through and are still involved with theater. It's all underground. It's not the same as mainstream. Mainstream Media is very standardized and formulaic. All the best creativity, I think, is underground. *

"But you like Discovery!" Yeah, I do. I like Peak/Prestige TV and vastly prefer it to Blockbuster Films and the one-and-dones on normal TV because the seasons are shorter, and the arcs span an entire season, so there's more time to develop a longer and more involved story than there was before. I still prefer independent/underground work but, as far as mainstream TV and film, I think Prestige TV is as good as it gets right now. And I'm glad DSC has modeled itself after that.

* It looks like everything is becoming more fragmented so maybe by the time of Star Trek, there is no mainstream. The dancing, the painting, the singing, and acting all things that could've been done in our own time. There's nothing that really screams "24th Century!" about it. But that's either because it was created by people at the end of the 20th Century or because art doesn't progress monolithically anymore in the future. With no money in the future, you don't have to worry about pushing whatever style happens to sell the most.

But that isn't quite the same as starship design or uniforms. I think Starfleet liked the TOS Film look and then stuck to that for an unusually long time. Extremely unusual compared to how fast things seem to change during the periods of Star Trek we see that are the actual focus of the series and films.

Honestly, its weird that you would get rapid shift in military or even paramilitary organizations like we saw between TOS and Wrath of Khan (going from color-coded to Space 1999 knockoff to a quasi Horatio Hornblower style) as military orgs are typically the most conservative of all. For instance, there has been hardly any changes since WW2 for instance in most military uniforms worldwide and its been about 8o years..

I've seen that but I disagree. The reason why we never see any notable paintings, composers etc etc etc is because it's never relevant to the story. Occasionally we do see theatre, music and art (data paints, Riker acts, Crusher dances, EMH sings) that reflect that such dramatic opportunities existed in real life for the citizens.

I dunno. I'm rewatching The Expanse right now. One of the things I love about the show is the amount of background texture that goes into it. From Belter Creole, to street art, to future fashion, to future pop music playing in the background. It really gets across that the future will be as foreign to us culturally as the past - something that Star Trek has always glossed over, alternating between "the future is just like today" and "the future is mostly like today, only blander and more beige."

I noticed this the other night when I watched "Point of Light," and I feel kind of bad bringing it up....but it's like one of those things that I can't "unsee" now that the thought has occurred to me:

Spoilers so it doesn't ruin your happiness like it kind of busted mine, so proceed at own risk (not an actual spoiler...more of a realization about a character arc):

Has anyone else noticed that Michael's arc this season is nearly identical to her arc last season?

S1 : Feels guilty about an action she took that had a negative consequence someone she cares deeply for. Must cope with consequences and ultimately redeem herself.

S2: Feels guilty about an action she took that had a negative consequence someone she cares deeply for. Must cope with consequences and ultimately redeem herself.

I'm sure it will be ok...but it just kind of bugged me.

I'm not convinced that Burnham will redeem herself. They said they're explaining why Spock never mentions her. If she redeems herself that would imply some sort of reconciliation. I think Burnham's arc this season might actually be the opposite. In S1, she was able to make things right. In S2, I don't think she does. She could, but I don't think that's what they're going to do.

I can barely wait to see this whole thing play out.

But this is Spock we are talking about, and something that carries massive emotional weight either way. Now I am happy whatever way they go, because going both ways can work if handled deftly, and I'm reasonably confident at this point the writers are able to pull them both off. But given the emotions involved, it would be out of character for Spock to ever bring it up regardless of the outcome unless compelled, as we have witnessed from repeatedly in his future
.

I'm speculating here so no spoiler needed...

Perhaps logically he'll be able to do so, but emotionally he never will?

That could be devastating for her, to know that he expresses forgiveness to her, but will never get over it.

Spock loves denial.

I've been wondering if Spock ends this season - literally - a changed man. Like, does he literally purge himself of all memories of Burnham? Or engage in some sort of meld-related transfer which results in all of his emotions related to their status going elsewhere? Then, at the end of the series, he will have no residual emotional connection - and possibly no memory - of Micheal, which - in the eyes of the showrunners - might square things away with canon.

Also...
Even if Burnham's overall character arc is similar in the first and second season, they're going about it in a different way. In the first season, they chose to unload almost all of the back story awkwardly in the two-part prologue. Thus the remainder of the season was focused on her climb back up and nothing else. In contrast, this season her "fall" involving Spock is a mystery box we're only slowly getting teased open. I know a lot of people claim to hate mystery boxes, but a lot of critics of the first season also felt it would have been much more effective if we had a slower reveal about why Burnham was considered a "mutineer."

That, sadly, is within the wheelhouse of TOS. Specifically "Requiem for Methuselah" when Spock tells Kirk to "Forget." He could do it to himself or Sarek could. I hope that's not what they do because that's effectively making Spock a stand-in for the fan who's against Burnham at every turn. Right from his first appearance on the series in "Brother" as a little kid when his parents introduce Burnham to him.

Have any energy weapons, other than Georgiou’s drone thing been fired so far in season 2? I don’t believe any have.

The most action we’ve see have been melee weapons.

Season 1 had weapons fire in nearly every episode.

Which is kinda silly since all we're doing is speculating based on what we've already seen.
But far be it for me to ruin your fun.

We're supposed to put up spoiler warnings for the first month a new episode is out. So, technically, it's against board rules to talk about details from any of S2 yet without a spoiler warning. And since this particular thread has no spoiler warning in it up-top, we have to do the Special Spoiler Code in our posts.

Trust me, I found this out the hard way last year. I posted something about DSC in GTD, while the second half of the first season was airing, only to find a mod edit that part into a spoiler bracket. I'd have done the same if I were them but, you know, it had been a while since we had a new Star Trek series, much less one I was interested in, so I didn't even think about that.
