To be honest, I didn't know what to think. Now that I've seen the entire first season, it was a compelling aspect. The Voq/Ash Tyler, I think, was one of the most relevant characters. He was allegorical in two ways. Today's coming to terms with transgenderism and what that means and also the conflicted duality of the Muslim culture and religion in western society. Again, his was the most human story, in my view, told. His journey was not unlike Spock's in that regard.

The one BIG problem I have with the season one wrap up was it's b*llschtick ending to the Klingon war that was pure deus ex machina tripe. On the plus side, Clint Howard got Cadet Tilly high and Commander Burnham's speech at the end was pure cheese reminiscent of Capt. James T. Kirk himself.

All-in-all, season one was a brilliant success and moves past Enterprise, The Animated Series and Voyager on my Trek Series in order of greatness list (currently: 1- Star Trek: TOS, 2- DS9, 3- TNG, 4- Discovery, 5- VOY 6- TAS and 7- ENT).

Glad you liked it, I enjoyed reading your comments. Hopefully you start watching season 2 soon.

I am assuming this is an overall ranking (and not just season 1s). Kind of matches my rankings too, I would rate ENT above TAS. But if I just base it on season 1 of each series, then Discovery will be 3rd after TOS and DS9.

I enjoyed season 1 a lot. For the first time this century I feel the people making Star Trek are in tune with what the series could be. The have vision and a definite point of view. I may not like all they do. I may even hate something here and there but that just means they are doing something right because if sensibilities aren't being rattled then they are not doing their jobs properly.

Yes, it is an overall ranking. I don't want to be too easy or jinx things, however, there is a very real possibility Discovery could become my second favorite Trek. Just to say that finally a new Star Trek production even has that potential makes my heart sing. It has been so long.

Basically my stance. I think DSC is the best Star Trek since DS9 ended, and that's what I tell people in Real Life who are curious about it. Though in actuality, I prefer DSC to DS9, personally.

The Orion Embassy on Qo'noS really makes "Will You Take My Hand?" I could do without Burnham constantly interjecting at the end ("As it should be", yes, we get it, Micheal), but the Embassy and the appearance of the Enterprise make up for it. The resolution to the war is Duex ex Machina, but I can live with it.

Clint Howard is great in any episode he's in of any Star Trek. "Wooosh! I'm invisible!"

"Durex ex Machina" coincidentally is the name of my condom vending machine business

Glad you are enjoying the ride. Season 1 is definitely different than any Trek I've experienced, but it's worth getting through.

    Season 2 is EXCEPTIONAL.
    Get there.
    Don't give up on it.

Just a quick update: I am caught up on season two - Loving it (for the most part). Going to check the Star Trek shorts next. Unfortunately I probably won't be able to comment until tomorrow.

Saru's short Trek should help inform Ep 4 with more layers. :)

    Uhm, no. :nyah::lol:

I am a person of taste and discrimination though. Abrams and his company did a lousy job with the Kelvin Universe Star Trek movies. Arams did a terrible job with Star Wars. If ever there was one who deserved the title of being a total Jar-Jar it is Abrams. I almost went with Jughead Jones Abrams but figured that would be too nice and blunt the blade of my disdain.

Unfortunately, it also renders taking any criticism against Abrams difficult to take seriously.

And, no, Abrams is deserving of no such title.

I have to agree with Daniel and Fireproof.

Calling him an immature nickname really isn't helping here.

So far I am liking what I'm seeing in season 2, however, it is also too soon to be definitive. The shakiest for me is the Klingon council and then the Section-31 tie-in. Not saying it is bad just that I really need to see how it plays out. I am nervous, even skeptical, about the Spock arc. Nothing has really changed mind on Burnham's Vulcan roots. I believe in tying her to Sarek, Amanda and Spock they created a situation where the upside is almost non-existent and the downside near limitless. Loving Anson Mount's incarnation of Captain Pike. Cadet Tilly is starting to wear a little thin but not too much so. Saru is terrific as he has always been. I am hoping Anthony Rapp stays with the series. Nice to see the other crewmembers on the bridge have gotten to be noticed.

Abrams does well with original content. Movies and series of his own creation are fine. He is terribly hack when it comes to dealing with other folks franchises though. He boils them down to a lowest common denominator and either transforms them into farces (as he did with Star Trek) or does a vapidly retarded rehashing of previous chapters (as he did with Star Wars). This, however, strays from the topic so I shall comment no further here.

This commentary is better presented. Name calling is beneath such discussion.

I'll comment no further here, but I do respect these comments, even if I do not agree.

Just finished watching it and you are so right! Saru's ordeal in "An Obol For Cheron" had caused tears already, however, the Short Trek "The Brightest Star" adds a world of gravitas to his story. He is a character of quiet strength and superior courage. To choose the path he did, despite the very nature of his being, takes real grit. Love the way it played out.
