Sisko in his TNG-style uniform

What made "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost" most interesting was seeing Sisko wearing the TNG-style uniform he wore in the two-part premiere. In fact, a lot of Starfleet officers in San Francisco in this two-part story arc were wearing TNG-style uniforms. I like that this was done but was there any significant reason to this? It kind of almost made me feel like i was watching TNG. It would've also been cool to see Jadzia and Bashir in their TNG-style uniform again in these two episodes too!

Slightly unrelated but my favorite scene in "Paradise Lost" was the night scene with Sisko sitting outside taking a breather, then "O'Brien" sits next to him. As their short conversation goes south, he's revealed to be a Changeling impersonating O'Brien!

I think the DS9 jumpsuits were originally intended to be for space station/starbase personnel while at their assigned post out in the field.
Then VOY came along and changed that.

Sisko wears the TNG uniform in the beginning of Emissary, the changes to the new uniform. I've always speculated that the nee design happened because the black band against Brooks' dark skin looked terrible. Coversely, putting a colored band around the shoulders allowed more lighting options for all the cast.

^The decision to have new uniforms was made well before Avery was cast. In The Making of Deep Space Nine, they talk about how during pre-production Berman was specific that he wanted to re-use as little as possible from TNG, with Runabouts instead of shuttles and new uniforms given as the two primary examples.

Shower thought, over the years we got to see every DS9 main character (who was in Starfleet) in the old TNG uniform except for Ezri. :)

Ok (although Brooks does look terrible in the TNGs.)

Regarding never seeing Ezri in the TNG uniform... she likely was still at the Academy when the newer DS9 uniforms went to regular use, so she would never have had the opportunity to wear the TNG ones.

It probably helps that Sisko, Bashir, Jadzia & Miles all came to the station in the TNG style in 'Emissary' and Worf showed up in his E-D uniform for 'Way of the Warrior'.

It's not as if anything would force us to think that the DS9 style is "newer" and the TNG style "older".

Rather, it sounds quite possible that the TNG style is the "classier" of the two, and only frontier hicks and people in small ships go for the more utilitarian coveralls all day long. At least one visiting starship had its crew wear DS9 style, in "Shakaar"; might have been a small tub like Janeway's. And even Picard mellowed out in his later years, allowing his crew to don the coveralls for dirty away assignments to raided observatories and whatnot...

Out-universe, the TNG uniforms (even the later-season ones) have to be cut just right to look decent, while the DS9/VOY style can be worn right off the rack by guest stars if need be. Which made it easy for ST:GEN to go coverall, but doing the reverse with every "visiting big ship" in DS9 might have been a chore. The Sutherland of course went for yet another type of uniform...

Ah yes, GEN slipped my mind. It came out before VOY. So it wasn't VOY's fault that the new uniform was used on starships.

Not true, since the DS9 ones didn't supplant the TNG ones, they just had different uses.

I'm referring to the FIRST CONTACT onward uniforms. Ezri didn't even graduate Starfleet Academy until well after those uniforms were put to use. Starships and starbases used them, which means the TNG ones were phased out.

Regarding VOY, early storyboard artwork for "Caretaker" shows crewmembers in the regular TNG uniforms, but somewhere in there the choice was made to switch to the DS9 S1-5 ones before production began. It may have been a coincidence of design: new uniforms were designed for the TNG crew in Generations, but were abandoned and replaced with a mixture of TNG and DS9 ones. I fathom the possibility that the newer GENS uniforms may have been intended to be used on VOY as well, but once the design direction was set another way then it became a case of moving forward with that?

It may have been a practical consideration, too. Since DS9 had created plenty of the jumpsuit uniforms for background extras, they realized they could draw on the same pool. Since the TNG uniforms were getting a little older, they might have figured why not just get everyone on board with the same current design for production purposes.

One could always count on Paramount insisting things be done on the cheap.

I always thought that the DS9 uniform was a "Starbase Uniform" and the TNG uniform was the "Starship Uniform". This worked until you consider the starship uniform being in use on Earth. And then Voy came along and really screwed it all up. Agree with the above poster that early art for Voy featured the Starship Uniform, which would have been correct. The FC uniform standardizes uniforms across the service (and reduces confusion!)

As mentioned earlier, the DS9 uniform was aboard ship in GEN before it was used in VOY.

i know many people hated the mixing of the DS9 and TNG uniforms in generations, but i thought it added realism. so i definitely loved when the DS9ers wore the TNG uniforms from time to time.

i'll never not be sad we never once got to see janeway and her crew in the TNG uniforms... she should've at least been wearing it during the flashback scenes in "relativity".
