The two characters from TOS who are the right age to see - as they should already be somewhat established in their careers - are McCoy and Scott.

And both might be doing civilian jobs at the time, in case we need the variety. That is, McCoy's exact transition from the Old Country Doctor stage of his career to starhopping was never nailed down in Prime, and Scotty referred to his years of working on "freighters" (which Starfleet shouldn't have, as the military term is "transport") and "cruisers" (which weren't starships, as Scotty next separately mentions those), plus a tenure advising Denevan miners.

Both might be in Starfleet equally well, though. But more fun could be had the other way.

I say they hire George Takei and simply use some of that de-aging computer graphic stuff that is becoming all the rage and have him play a cadet version of himself if that is what age he is suppose to be. Maybe he is friends with Tilly and maybe even a old romance unless of course Prime Universe Sulu being gay is part of canon now like Kelvin Universe Sulu was. That is also assuming he wasn't bi in the Kelvin Universe. They basically can do whatever best fits the story and it all can be fit into canon just fine.

They could always bring back Takei as a much older captain in some kind of time travel episode. Plenty of ways to do that, but it would be hard to keep secret. Still, it would be a big draw, and I'd love to see him.

I'd certainly like to see that a lot more than Shatner back as Kirk (as that would require even more convoluted storytelling, and, as much as I find Shatner entertaining, Takei is more awesome imo).

While I like Takei more than Shatner I would much prefer to see Kirk to Sulu if I had a choice. Granted I also want to see Sulu again as well. Just one more time for the orginial cast that is still alive. Granted I am not sure if Nichols could do it though. I think , sadly she is suffering from dementia.

I didn't hear about that with her son. I know Stan Lee was possibly suffering from elder abuse by his daughter but I didn't know something similiar might be happening to Nichols.

There is always a chance and one I think the show will do at some point and that is a time jump in that they skip ahead 2 to 3 years. Part of me wants them to really push it and set the show in the post "TOS" universe were they are wearing the "TOS" red movie uniforms or some variation that might have existed in between "TMP" and "Wrath of Khan." Put some old age makeup on everyone and you would be fine.

How young? Takei was pushing 30 when he started on Star Trek. The average age of an O-3 in the US Military is that age. Sulu might be in his last year at the Academy or recently graduated in 2257.

Yeah. He actually states his age in The Apollo episode. No way to argue any other way with him.
So he was born the same year Archer died and the Enterprise was launched.

12+4=16. So, yes he was a teenager. He is a child prodigy and graduated as a teen. The Kelvin movies take place in the the late 2250's. Roughly the same time as DISCO in the Prime Universe.

I've given this considerable thought, and I've come up with an undeniable conclusion based on heavy amounts of data:

We very well might see Sulu.
