It could theoretically be the same universe but void of continuity or without the law of non-contradiction in place. Maybe the whole thing is Benny Russell's story and Benny's writing a new story while forgetting or not caring about how it fits in with the rest of the stories. As they've said on star trek plenty of times: "If you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth"

I do not believe that was ever the intent.

really?
  • that quantum drive destroys canon bigly
  • they somehow forgot how beaming works
  • federation vs planetary union
  • no vulcans (or anybody else we know) at all
  • etc
i don't call it a tng rippoff but

tng 2.0 (under new managment)
i prefer trek and accept that it is maturing with time (i do not necessarily condone all of that maturing)

canon is overrated

SISKO: I suppose it did. But I have begun to wonder. What if it wasn't a dream? What if this life we're leading, all of this, you and me, everything. What if all this is the illusion?
JOSEPH: That's a scary thought.
SISKO: I know, I know. But maybe, just maybe, Benny isn't the dream, we are. Maybe we're nothing more than figments of his imagination. For all we know, at this very moment, somewhere far beyond all those distant stars, Benny Russell is dreaming of us.

Benny Russel model of reality

Yeah, but that isn't every tom dick and harry like he said.
He said that he had heard rumors. Given all the black badges on Discovery at one time and the war, I wouldn’t be surprised if some crew members were spreading rumors about Section 31. There may be some vague awareness, like a guy who knows a girl who knows a trill who knows an andorian who knew a guy whose brother had joined it and told him about it. Most probably doubt it’s even real, dismissing it as a story cadets tell each other. It probably even benefits Section 31 since anything real can be easily dismissed as hearsay.

Some people just aren't happy unless they're watching Star Trek that reminds them of when they used to wear MC Hammer pants. They think new Star Trek "Can't Touch This".

I'm late to the game on this one due to being on business travel all week. And, I'm not going to read 30 pages and let my opinion be swayed. I'll do that later.

This is a solid 9 again for me. First time I've given two DSC episodes 9's in a row. And I'm shocked because I thought this would be a garbage episode

Reasons:
1 Character, character, character- This was a huge character piece. Lots of great stuff between Tyler and L'Rell. Shazad Latif continues to be a great actor and Mary Chiefo is one of the best, most dedicated actors to ever play a Klingon. Also, the advancement of Amanda's character and the insight into her relationship with Spock and Michael was excellent. I also like seeing Tilly in a different light. This was one of the most character-driven DSC episodes thus far.

2. Tone- I'm very pleased to see something tonally and structurally different from the first two episodes of S2. As much as I liked both, I was beginning to worry that we'd be watching 90's Trek and The Orville instead of Star Trek Discovery before too long, and I'm very glad to see that the writers and producers are still dedicated to varying tones and approaches. No stale repetitive crap here. They can do lighthearted adventure, ethical conundrums, and dark palace intrigue all in one series. Because that's what makes Trek so great.

3. Deepened Mystery- The mystery theme of the Red Angel/Signals was sufficiently advanced, and we now have an even deeper mystery with what is going on with Lt. Spock. And what's up with the evil(?) spore creature? I'm more intrigued each week.

4. Michelle Yeoh- I love that the Emperor was back, and she's got a little playfulness that has developed since her introduction to our universe. It's a good start of an evolution for the character, which is needed if they plan on doing their own series.

5- Visual Appeal- The costumes and sets were phenomenal in this episode. Top notch without a doubt.

6. Klingon Plotline- This was a proper Klingon "palace intrigue" episode. Reminded me of some of the better TNG era Klingon episodes, except better in some ways. Good surprises, realistic maneuvering, lots of fun. The fight scene with the House Kor dickheads was very cool. The whole thing was very "Game of Thrones-ish" which, on an individual episode basis, is not a true all a bad thing. I just wouldn't want it every week.

Overall, this subverted my expectations and therefore surpassed them as well. I am EXTREMELY pleased to see that "light and frothy with a touch of comfort food" isn't going to be a week-to-week happening, and they recognize the need to change it up, like the best seasons of TNG and DS9.
