Is the Picard show the "last chance saloon" for anyone else?

Nothing to fix, it is Star Trek... in name only. I doubt GR would recognize prequels that doesn't resemble a pilot he personally, admittedly loved "The Cage". Re-imagined in the future? Of course, but you're distorting it such, GR reimagined Star Trek with TNG, and moving forward was the passion. Disco is re-writing it retroactively as a prequel and it disrespects the hard work done on TOS. If Disco was set after TNG I could accept their bullsh*t with Red Angels and other gimmicks they're working tirelessly to provide.

You realize Gene's son Eugene Roddenberry is an executive producer of DISCO, and has been from the beginning, right?

Then this misses the point and misses the point of GR's attitude.

Wrong. The only show Kurtzman will be taking a direct hand in is Discovery, because of all the BS that's gone on behind the scenes. He's going to stay at "30,000 feet" (his words, not mine) in regard to the other productions.

Yes I do, and judging from your comment Eugene is talking to GR in the spiritual word. FYI I was referring to Gene not Eugene.

Yeah, but are you saying that Gene wouldn't be supportive of a project his own son is attached to? Okay....

Dude, you sound like a fundamentalist who thinks he knows the "true" religion.

You need to learn to say "this is my personal taste" and recognize you don't speak for other fans, much less Gene Roddenberry.

While I agree they've reimagined Disco too much to be anything other than a reboot, Kirk met the Greek god Apollo himself. They did a Haloween episode with space witches. If you include the cartoons, Kirk met Lucifer. How is all that okay but magical red angels "bullshit"?

My favourite thing about Trek is that you can have a gritty action episode one week and a fun little episode about baseball the next.

The older series felt more like a semi-blank canvas for cool sci-fi stories, just like the magazine in Far Beyond the Star. DS9 had the biggest ongoing story, but it still made plenty of time for those cool little self-contained episodes. Until they go back to that format, I don’t really care what’s happening with Trek. It’s what made the show feel unique, at least to me.

What, like the Harry Mudd episode in the first season of Disco? Not completely self-contained, but close to it.

Modern Drama TV is all about continuing story lines that are typically 1 season long (box-set binging). It really started in the 90s, with things like Babylon 5, Buffy, even DS9. Those still had standalone episodes though. Enterprise stuck out the episodic ways until season 3, widely seen as being better than season 1 and 2.

24 wen further with the the entire-season-as-one-long-episode method (although early on it was more 2 stories of 13 episodes each). Shows like Game of Thrones would make no sense whatsoever if viewed randomly.

Do any modern drama shows follow the TNG/TOS/Voyager format of little if no continuing story? Doctor Who comes to mind. I'm currently watching season 2 of supergirl, that one lacks a major arc, unlike Flash/Arrow/Legends running along side it. Haven't seen enough Orville yet to decide but that also feels episodic.

Discovery season 1 had a couple of stand alone episodes (the one on the planet for example). From the two episodes of season 2, it seems more on the stand aloneness - sure there's a continuing arc, but the individual stories stand by themselves. It feels far more like 90s trek than most TV.

VOY and ENT were decent, but it's been 20 years since I loved anything this franchise has put out, meanwhile there have been numerous sci-fi shows that were better than Trek. It's very upsetting.I won't even watch the Orville because I'm afraid I'll like it too much. The Expanse, Dark Matter, Kill Joys all the way back to SG1, Firefly, Farscape and BSG. So many shows have been vastly superior to what Trek has put out.

Then we get Discovery S1 which was a clusterfluck of mindless action and plot twists. S2 has been better so far, but I've just accepted that the studio split and the JJ movies have changed this franchise into something else. Something I'm not interested in. I'm holding out hope that the Picard series will be different from JJ or Discovery in every way.

You mean the way a majority of original Star Trek fans saw TNG in 1987? ;)

I mean, it is what it is, but I would like to see Star Trek be the best esp since it popularized this whole spacefaring thing and the shows that came after copied, or were inspired by Star Trek. From TOS to mid 90s Trek, how many shows could compare, but since then there's been a string of sci-fi/space fairing shows that have been superior to whatever Trek has put out imo.

HA! Idk. I wasn't born back when, but I've gotten some insight from my dad and my older brother, and from what I learned from them, the friends they associated with loved it from the start. Went to the Creations conventions, I think, and the fans there embraced it. There was a steady increase in the syndicated market for it all across the nation, but what I was told the hate was not coming from the fans but from the old guard themselves.

Supportive of his son re-writing his vision??? God, I would hope not! I would like to think he would be supportive of Eugene making Star Trek which would be a follow up to TNG and beyond but not this--speaking of Discovery-- but for the Picard series? I would like think Yes, provisionally.

It's bullsh*t because the subplot itself is altering Spock's history retroactively.

You and I clearly have different ideas regarding what constitutes a healthy relationship between parent and child.
