Supergirl - Season Four

You know what I wonder. Is Dean Cain ever going to return as Jeremiah Danvers. It's weird they have this kind of plot point just out there that nobody ever talks about and you think they would address it at some point.

TV writers are at the mercy of actor availability. They can't advance a story arc if they can't get the actor back. Indeed, that happens a lot with Supergirl -- cf. the departures of Cat Grant, Maggie Sawyer, and Winn, and the recasting of Alura.

Jason

He should return--that's a rather large loose end that needs to be tied up in one way or another. Wasn't his relationships/life/choices supposed to be so defining / important to the Danvers family? His situation/whereabouts are just not addressed at all.

As far as I know, the recasting of Alura was actually anticipated because the producers knew exactly how long they could keep using Laura before her Broadway commitment and her pregnancy made her unavailable.

Man, that was one hell of downer at the end of this episode. Didn't see that coming, should have though really.

At one point, I was convinced that Alex was going to let the aliens kill Haley. I guess I forget this show isn't like that, and the solution they figured out is much more in tone with the show.

Supergirl
Season 4 / episode 11 - "Blood Memory"

SG/Kara: Good to see her (painfully) brief talk with James. The series lost much of what that brought to the characters in season one.

Despite trying to empathize with Nia, it was irresponsible to reveal her ID, as the latter is not prepared to deal with the world of the Haleys and Lockwoods who will target anyone associated with aliens in general and Supergirl in particular.

Comrade Kara: So, some mechanically triggered Gamma ray effects from Comrade Kara turns drugs into violent, Hulk-like creatures? Okay....

Her handler: "There is someone I need to reach...in America." Lena? Lex? I hope this mystery pays off.

Alex: So, memory-wiped Alex does not appreciate or respect Supergirl. Interesting that her alien tolerance levels were directly elevated thanks to a personal connection.

"This world is filled with a lot of people that are bigger and stronger than her, and that kind of vulnerability...it makes you angry! When you feel powerless enough, you will do anything it takes...to feel strong."

In a single sentence, Alex just justified Lena--and the Children of Liberty's positions. Fascinating turn.

Nia: Note that her tolerant town happened to be a small one--something of a farming community. Clearly (and rarely) the showrunners were trying to flip the stereotype of small towns being a hotbed of alleged intolerance.

Nia resisting her heritage is a longstanding trope of fiction, but in this case, I do like how she only dreams things to worry her--or inspire fear--a tease of things to come for a couple of main characters..

Nasty, unexpected spider-bite killing her mother. But that's a bit of TV exaggeration as no North American spider--not the Black Widow or Brown Recluse--kills instantly from one bite. Even if one is bitten, the victim would need to be very young, elderly, or suffering from conditions such as a compromised immune system, respiratory issues, etc. before the venom becomes lethal.

Annoying sister with entitlement/would-be destiny issues was...annoying. then, she took a deep dive into offensive-ville with her "...not even a real woman" line. So, that's what she believed all along,

James / Lena:
Yeah, it was screaming telegraphing for Lena and James to offer different answers during the game--in other words, no "inside advantage" of truly knowing each other, and the set up for one of his own reporters to uncover what kind of genetic testing was conducted with L-Corp's "Black Budgeted" funding. His burying the story is--hopefully--not the result of living in denial, but wanting to uncover Luthor secrets on his own, with his emotions being a buffer of understanding that would not come from a detached reporter trying to get their scoop. That said, he seems to be sitting on an ethical fence, and if played right, it can lead to something big going down not only between James and Lena, but Lex as well, as I cannot imagine any of Lena's work being completely divorced from the shadow or influence of Lex.

NOTES:
Fast moving hour.

Children of Liberty: at least they did not drop that storyline, but Roberta Miller seeking revenge as an accumulative reaction of being bullied was the all-too-obvious Very Special Episode sub-plot. It would have been just as effective to have her being fueled with revenge out of pure love for her brother.

Speaking of Liberty, Lockwood returns in the next episode.

GRADE: A.

I love this show
What's not to love?

Actually, I thought this one started off kind of uninspiring, but it definitely picked up in the last couple of acts. Alex's confrontation with Supergirl started to justify for me the choice to go this direction, a situation that struck me as somewhat contrived now starting to pay real emotional dividends. And I liked how it played into Kara's impulsive decision to reveal her identity to Nia; in Kara's conscious and stated intent, it was to help Nia, but it was clearly also to fulfill a need of her own, to help fill the void left by her altered relationship with Alex.

Also great to see the Children of Liberty back in the mix -- that storyline has been way too fruitful to lose track of. (And Witwer's back in the preview for the next episode. Yay!)

I was a bit shocked that Maeve would say something so cruel to Nia.
In a single sentence, Alex just justified Lena--and the Children of Liberty's positions.
"Justified" is a strong word -- there's no question the show considers the Children of Liberty, and their real-world equivalents, to be plainly in the wrong -- but I did catch the import of that line too. As with the "Man of Steel" episode, the show is trying to acknowledge what motivates such xenophobia, bigotry, and hatred, which gives the storytelling a complexity that has not always been this series' strong suit.

I bet you her source is Lex.
It was an okay episode. Bit on the nose with the Hulk allusions with the gamma rays.

A bonus superhero actor in this episode: One of the drug dealers in the RV (the dark-haired one) was played by Brennan Mejia, the Red Ranger from Power Rangers Dino Charge/Dino Supercharge.

Wow, I was thinking how subtle they were being about how even a tolerant family could have unconscious prejudices about trans people, assuming that Nia wouldn't get the powers because she wasn't overtly female from birth. But then they came out and hit really hard with Maeve's very hurtful comment about Nia. That was painful. I was wondering how they'd incorporate Nia's trans identity into the storytelling, and they found a very deft and effective way to use her powers as a way to engage with it. And at the same time, it managed to resonate with what Kara was going through with Alex (though that was a bit too on the nose).

I love it that the reason Kara revealed her identity to Nia was not because of some life-or-death crisis or by an accidental discovery, but as a choice to let Nia know she understood her pain and was there to support her. That's so like her. Although it would've been a simpler scene if she hadn't been wearing that sweater and could've just done the classic pull-open-the-shirt-to-show-the-S reveal. When she flew up into the air, I expected her to come back down dressed as Supergirl.

I liked the ep, but am wondering why Alex is so tolerant of our friendly neighborhood Martian if she lost her "tolerant of aliens" perspective when she lost her memories of Kara being Supergirl.

Does she remember Brainy is an alien?

What the hell did I just watch? Lol. I knew this show was cheesy, I didn't think it would be this cringe..yikes. This show is about on par with Charmed and all the other girly shows of TheWB now. I was hoping it would be better, since it holds the Superman IP, but blah.

Hopefully the film version of Supergirl will be vastly different from Benoist.

Where was Cryer's Lex? I watched it to see how ridiculous he'd be.

I'm sure Cain is very busy.

He came out as a Trump supporter some months back. His role will probably get recast.

Recasting or making it seem like Cain was let go, because of his political position, is illegal, and will inspire a lawsuit.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/n...ge-pro-trump-superman-actor-dean-cain-1150718

Limited investigation says that Cain's church supports Trump, so Cain supports Trump. Which means that he doesn't blindly support everything Trumpian, but the Church is willing to overlook the homophobia and racism and xenophobia if Trump can overturn Roe v. Wade.

Meh?

This is from October, before the kids in cages stuff, so maybe Dean's faith in Trump is more shakey now?

Besides Jimmy's storyline last month was about how you have to talk to people with ass backwards ideology, to help them realise that they are wrong, since it can't be that hard, since they are wrong.

The League of Supermen should think about putting together a statement about how dark this timeline is becoming, if Dean Cain can get his shit together.

"Blood Memory" was good.

Yes to all of that.

So, I guess Jimmy is covering up for Lena, now.

I’m hoping that we will see Dain Cain as Superman for the Crisis event.

I’m really not a fan of this Russian Supergirl story. Seems very cliche to me. I’m hoping they play it to that she’s actually a nice person.

Before they said that it is a genetic superpower that tracked with females genetically.

Now they are saying that it follows the female bloodline in families, mother to daughter.

It's pretty clear that neither of these comments are true, because the Naltorians don't know how the dream powers work, so maybe how the powers track down the family lines is about female identity or souls, or the passing down of the dream powers is far less random than the Naltorians think. There could be a sorting hat in play selecting the dream girl of each generation, and that hat (I don't think it's actually a hat) they say that Nia is a woman.
