What about Sybok? (Spock's half-brother)

I think one of his parents (I don't remember) is in Starfleet around the time of Discovery and TOS. I doubt they'd mention it, really just another easter egg if they did but it would be fun.
They could make it the Vulcan Admiral from season 1, Tuvok was born 2264 so it would fit! ;)

Sybok was effectively sent off of Vulcan. Vulcan still has enough influence not to have him stir up trouble in the core worlds.

Unless there's a specific story reason for Sybok, there's no need to include him. At best I'd wager that Spock might mention he has a half-brother in conversation, but that's about it.

The other thing about referencing STV is that now that we have the spore drive, why didn't Sybok try to use the Discovery to get to the center of the galaxy? It would have gotten him there in a second rather than the one hour it took for that POS Enterprise-A to travel there ;)

Because the Discovery becomes lost in space at some point prior to 2280s, and is probably as mythical as Sha Ka Ree.

Or maybe Sybok installed a spore drive offscreen to the Enterprise-A.

At this point he’d only show up to ask Sarek for money and empty out the medicine cabinets. He’s basically Jesse from Breaking Bad in the early seasons. His heart is in right place, but his head isn’t. Later he finds religion.

I get the feeling that the spore drive is going to be found to be damaging to the mycelial network that underpins the multiiverse and as a result will be banned from usage at some point towards the end of the show. They touched on it a bit during the MU episodes where the Terran Empire's reactor was going to destroy the network which would potentially threaten all life in the multiverse.

While I was only half-joking, I haven’t seen the Calypso Short Trek that:

showed the ship abandoned.

I see that probably happening, too, or something comparable to the Treaty of Algeron where a fleet of ships from the multiverse, using spore drives, comes after the Emperor. Discovery goes to their multiverse in a stalemate situation, and both sides agree to abandon the technology after some big sacrifice or compromise is made. But I like your idea, too.
