Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

I really DO like this ship! It's positively dorky.
I don't like it 40 EURs much. But I'm not blaming anyone that does, and I'd appreciate this little weird one to show up again on DIS!
It actually did briefly make an appearance as a background schematic in one of the Short Trek episodes. Can't remember which one, though.

It shows up in ”Calypso“, I just re-watched it last night. We see it as a close-up of one of those memorial plaques in the mess hall, hanging right below HAL 9000‘s GLaDOS‘ Zora‘s little visual indicator.

I got the Clarke. I could see that one being a TOS ship with the proper hull colour and nacelles.

I found another store that sells models and it actually offers them for a much better price that the place I usually get them. I got two from the guy yesterday, both at a steep discount. I got the Kazon ship for only $12.99 CAD, which I think is the cheapest I've ever paid for a model (I think he said he got it on liquidation). I also got the 23rd century Tholian ship, and even that one was nearly $10 cheaper than what I typically pay at my regular place (he was charging the same price even for new ships like the Lantree). This is going to make for a tough decision about where I get my models in the future...

Anyway, as to the models themselves, not much to say about the Kazon ship. I don't think they're anyone's favorite aliens (which the magazine goes into), so the ship isn't that exciting, but the model's decent enough and I happy for such a discount.

The "remastered" Tholian ship is a bit more interesting, especially if you compare it to its 22nd century counterpart. They actually did a good job of making look more advanced than that one. The magazine talks about how the remastered production actually got some money from Toshiba (who trying to promote their new HD-DVD format over Sony's new blu-ray format.... awkward) but they still saved money by modifying the 22nd century ship, rather than creating one from scratch.

If you look back through this thread, you'll see I've complained more than once about the unsightly seam lines cutting across the nose of the 22nd century ship. The 23rd century ship is thankfully much more subtle about this.

One last little tidbit on a personal note: These two ships bring my total number (not counting the extra Enterpise-D that I got in a 3-pack and keep in a box) up to 85, which is one more than the shelf I bought can hold. I'm now going to have to figure out something else long term for any future ships.

spacedock arrived yesterday. it's highly detailed and has what i think is the best use of transparent plastic by eaglemoss yet:

That thing is so freakin' beautiful. I always wondered how they got that cool blue effect under the mushroom head. Makes sense - matches the effect from the original miniature perfectly without the need for actual paint or illumination. A shame it all seems to be plastic, though. Was hoping for some metal to be integrated into it to give it some heft.

Heh...look how long it took for us to get Spacedock 01. Something as immensely complex as Yorktown? Likely on-par with the common knowledge on doing a large-scale Narada - not in this lifetime, I wager.

I believe, with the fourth film shelved, that interest in the Kelvin universe will fade, making it certain that we won't see ships from the universe which have not been announced, like the Yorktown or the fleet of spacecraft from the first film.

TBH, I’d be content if the Beyond Ent-A was the last Kelvinverse starship to be released by EM.

It would be a crying shame if it didn’t: I’m imagining myself zooming it (gently of course!) around my living room, recreating the further adventures it might have undertaken in the no-longer happening 4th movie... :(

So this is weird - I just got Issue #136 (Keldon Class) and #139 (Vaadwaur Assault Fighter) today, but no #137 (Xindi-Primate Starship) or #138 (USS Lantree). They've been skipped, but they're oddly both available in the online store. This happen to anyone else?

The Cylon Basestar also arrived today. She's a beauty!
