I will say that after all of my complaints about lack of character development; I failed to mention how much I enjoyed the Saru character and also Lorca after I got used to him but then the writers screwed that up.

I really thought I was going to like Saru in the run-up to the show. But the character ended up falling flat for me. You're right, they really screwed Lorca up.

So, thanks to Blu Ray I am finally watching Discovery. I tried hard to avoid spoilers for the last year or so, but have been aware of all the screaming and gnashing going on here abouts and elsewhere.

Anyways, I'm four episodes in and I'm liking it. Okay, not the best Trek ever - that's still DS9. But, it ain't the worst Trek I've ever seen neither - that's still most of Voyager. But, I've been watching Trek for about 50 years now and have gotten used to having some ups and downs along the way.

Admitted, it's got a different look than I'd expect for a prequel to TOS - but it could sort of follow the look established in Enterprise. Not a big fan of the blingy uniforms, or the yet-another-Klingon-redesign. But those things aside, I'm finding myself entertained and interested to see more. And am loving some of these new characters - especially Tilly and Stamets. And Dog Jones is doing some really interesting stuff with Saru.

Gotta say I'm not entirely sure what all the fuss has been the past year or so, guys. Yeah, it's dong some stuff in a sorta new way, but it still looks like Trek to me.
Pretty much right where you are now. Bought the Blu-ray after having not watched previously, four episodes in, really liking it, can't figure what people's problem is.

Most of us have a certain product of popular culture or two that we have strong negative feelings for.

Did you read some comments out there about The Last Jedi? These people have serious issues and make me very afraid. I could justify similar feelings for a movie only if you are a black person living in the 1915 and have just watched The Birth of a Nation.

I wish I didn't.

There's usually a disconnect between their online and real life personas. They tend to use cyberspace as an outlet for unresolved frustrations. So when you see a mean and abusive fanboy in a comments section somewhere, chances are you're dealing with a sad loser who never once stood up for themself in the real world.

I don't doubt it. The problem is these people can do a lot of a damage even if you don't meet them in the real world. Ask the victims of Gamergate or the Jar Jar actor who was almost driven to suicide...

I recently read something about the Achmed Best case being misinterpreted and that it was the malevolent media writings that almost drove him to harm himself, not the fandom.

Well, if you prefer, there are the cases of Kelly Marie Tran or Daisy Ridley.

Anyway, just to answer the OP's question: no, if you consider yourself a decent person and a well adjusted and functional human being, you are not supposed to hate a escapist piece of fiction...

In my part of the world actresses have been called whores and threatened with rape in social media. I don't even follow local Twittersphere any more, it's become too much.

There are numerous examples of celebrities, especially female, being heinously cyber-bullied. Rebecca Black, for one, was dragged through living hell. People literally sent her emails saying she should commit suicide, and this was when she was still a kid.

It's the first television Star Trek since DS9 that doesn't feel like a faded xerox of an outmoded storytelling formula and style.
Maybe a little unfair to Season 3 of Enterprise, which was tonally fairly unique by Star Trek standards.

Eh, wasn't impressed. Credit for trying, I guess? But the whole thing still felt bloodless to me, and Bakula was a fatally terrible choice for a Star Trek lead, such that nothing they ever wrote for Archer seemed convincing.

For me Enterprise went wrong right from the start with that horrible opening theme, the show itself was ok but I found the whole Xindi storyline to be poor at best, the Temporal Cold War and Romulan storylines was much better though.
