Mike and Rich spend a half hour discussing Short Treks and the state of STD. I found it quite funny. Good stuff.

Sorry I am done giving clicks and money to people just sitting around talking about the same stuff we talk about. Where's OUR check?

Yeah, I'm not seeing what value RLM is adding here in particular. They're at least usually interesting or amusing.

    Ah see, that's the thing...
It certainly didn't start out specifically for that reason.
It developed that over many years after first earning our respect as a place to come and discuss Star Trek in general, with everybody given the equal chance to espouse one's views.
The monetary aspect came only after it became necessary in order to maintain the site due to it's ever increasing use of bandwidth.

It didn't pop up overnight with the main goal of earning money by catering to the negative aspects of the fandom.

Fine with me. I'm not paying them out of my pocket. I read people's opinions here on trek BBS and there is advertising here. Is there much of a difference? I'm interested in their opinion in the way I'm interested in reading what some people have to say here.

Maybe that's the difference. I do not give a shit what two guys in hoodies and Trek t-shirts think about it. Do I like it? That's the only real question I have. If the answer is yes, I keep watching. I see way too many people watching these videos then repeating bullet points everywhere. I just make up my mind the old fashion way.

    Hilarious.

It's probably the most fair and honest discussion one could find on the series, the fans, and CBS's manipulative practices.

Rich Evans starts off his nerdrage hour by establishing his own personal idea of what Star Trek is as the single absolute truth about what Star Trek is. Are we sure that he's not a member here, because that's something straight out the entitled manbaby playbook.

I love redlettermedia. And what they say about the show is absolutely true. At the same time, it's noticeable they let Star Trek get away way better than Star Wars. And beneath all the snark, they really mostly seemed to like the Short Treks. Much better than the actual first season even. And I have to say: I agree wholeheartedly!

To be fair, all popular, mass-consumption entertainment is manipulation. That's at the very core of the contract between consumers and creators.

Red Letter Media got started talking about Star Trek in 2008 with their "Mr. Plinkett" review of Star Trek Generations.
You don't have to like it or respect it, but it hardly popped up overnight to cash in.

I've been their subscriber for ages and I enjoy most of their material. That said, sometimes they'll be full of shit and act like juvenile fanboys. Their Rogue One review was particularly stupid and over the top, and Mr. Plinkett videos range from brilliant to idiotic, but Nerd Crew is a spot-on mockery of the modern day "nerd culture".

Half in the Bag is mostly great. Mike Stoklasa and Jay Bauman know movies. They're often pretty biased, but that's fine. Rich Evans can be really funny, but there are times when he behaves like an obnoxious cretin.

I love RLM, but this review was neither humorous nor engaging. And the whole "made by people who hate Star Trek" thing is pretty weak.
