Classic Who on Twitch (Again!)

I dropped out of the marathon as I have the remainder of the classic series on DVD and devoting like six hours of my day to Doctor Who was a bit... straining over time, but I plan to rewatch the rest in some weeks or months and I'll definitely listen to that audio drama inbetween!
In case you weren't sure, you should be listening to so much of Big Finish! Granted there's a lot of it, but so much of it is excellent.

The initial idea was that, as all present day Time Lords were biased about the Doctor, the entire court (Inquistor, jury, prosecutor and defence - who the Doctor rapidly sacked) were Matrix projections of neutral future Time Lords. But due to hacking, or just an Elementary Dear Data-style snafu, the prosecutor was actually a malign future Doctor.

I'm of course aware of the universal love for Big Finish and have listened to some of the Sixth Doctor stuff on Spotify, but I have avoided most of the audios because they feature Doctors I hadn't seen the TV stories from (at the time), but now I'm planning to catch up a bit :)

Sure, I just suggested it to those who just have Trial fresh in their minds. I'd also add Trial of the Valeyard, which is between Trial of a Time Lord and The Last Adventure, basically.

Excellent. If you need any suggestions, I'm full of advice.

I'd love to hear some; the sheer number of Doctor Who Big Finish stuff is a bit overwhelming. I generally got the new 8th Doctor/War Doctor/Gallifrey/Time War stuff on my radar, but other than that, The Lost Stories and that 6th Doctor regeneration story I've got basically no clue

Closer we get to the present, more painful the quality of the effects somehow gets. Technically they're getting better, but the effects of 70's were just somehow quaint and endearing, whereas now that we're close to the 90's they're just embarrassing. It really puts things into perspective that the episodes they were showing now were done the same year TNG premiered.

I'm only just getting to the Time War stuff myself (I've been rather behind for various reasons). I'm a huge fan of the Gallifrey series (it stars my two favorite companions, so how not?) so naturally I highly recommend listening to all of the Gallifrey series. Jumping in at the most recent set that focuses on the Time War won't be confusing, but you certainly gain more emotional impact if you listen to the whole series first.

The Inquisitor from ToaTL appears in the first series of Gallifrey audios (again played by Lynda Bellingham).

Heh, that's right. It's been sooo long since I listened to the first that I had forgotten about that.

Okidoki, will do that :)

True. With that said, I feel Remembrance of the Daleks wasn't that bad when it came to special effects (baring the shuttle flying through the air). Not TNG level of course, but not too bad. The extermination and teleport effects were reasonably good and the reliance of practical effects means it hasn't dated so badly. The special weapons Dalek still impresses.

Still not playing any of the animated episodes, but maybe that's a rights issue?

Either way, I'm glad they're giving people the chance for all of the existing serials!

Currently watching "The Daleks". Just beginning part 3 ("The Escape"). It's a seven-part serial so I don't know if I'll get through all of it tonight, but it just so happens that I have this one on disc, so I don't have to watch the whole thing before I go to bed.

While I didn't tune in early enough to catch the entire serial, and I've been doing this and that around the apartment while it was on, I finally got to see the "Dalek Invasion of Earth" for the first time. It is definitely one I would like to sit through from beginning to end someday. The Daleks were scary and brutal and I loved it. Of course, I'd seen the First Doctor's farewell to Susan before, but this is the first time I'd seen it in full context. Farewell, sweet Susan. To this day fans call for your return.

...what? Purist crap? :wtf:

We don't know why Twitch isn't playing those episodes, which is why I suggested it might be a rights issue.

Yeah could be that Twitch only want to pay for the standard package, which wouldn't include the animations or the BBC wants to keep them for DVD/Blu Ray release only or it's another issue.

Shame about the Dalek issue though, would have loved to have seen the reaction to the Five Doctors.

Twitch slipped in an "extra" last night. When Tom Baker's run completed (about 6:50 PM EST), instead of leading into "Castrovalva", Twitch streamed "K-9 & Company"!

I've read a lot of snark about the pilot, particularly its "theme" tune (composed by Ian Levine if I correctly read the credits) and the infamous closing sequence of the tin dog trying to sing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". these elements led me to believe it was going to be, well, less than stellar.

But I was pleasantly surprised! (This was the first time I had seen it.) Barring those two bits (which could easily be skipped without affecting the rest of the narrative), the pilot definitely had something of a Phillip Hinchcliffe/"early" Graham Williams feel to the production. Technically, the only "fantastic" element was the presence of K-9 himself, even the peril, a coven of witches, was "grounded" as there was no induction of actual supernatural events, just the threat of human sacrifice. Over the years, I had gotten the impression it was supposedly even more "kid friendly" than "The Sarah Jane Adventures", but, instead, it had that quasi gothic mid 70s feel as in DW stories like "Terror of the Zygons" or "Image of the Fendahl". Oh, despite the pilot's title, Liz Sladen as Sarah Jane is the real star with the tin dog more of a sidekick.

I'm now rather disappointed this concept was not greenlit for a series. But if I were a BBC executive and had only been shown those credits and the epilogue sequence, I would have "passed" upon it as well.

It's part of that new Blu-Ray package of series 12, Tom Baker's debut year, right? If you own that set, give it a watch. It's certainly better than I had been informed.
