Wow, that trailer was a whole lot of absolutely nothing new for the franchise. Comically big lasers, flying cars, obvious product placement... and that last line? "That was an incredible catch"? WTF kind of send-off line is that? Did they ask the editor to pick a line and random to end the trailer with? And to think this is what we lost the prospect of the genuinely weird-sounding Jump Street/MiB crossover to: Sad!

Also, between the Wizarding World and this, not to mention the fraying of global alliances with regard to such urgent issues as global warming, maybe this isn't really the time to keep on glorifying secretive organizations that not only hide their technical marvels from 99.99% of humanity, but also assault the minds of those who happen to witness them, with no legal legitimacy? I'm a huge MCU fan, so I'm hardly above enjoying low-calorie mass media, but the MiB franchise is a particularly iffy case.

The original three movies were hardly great films, but Sonnenfeld and Co. at least gave them some personality in terms of genuine weirdness and a tangible affection for NYC. Maybe this won't be another soulless franchise zombification like Ghostbusters '16, but that's certainly the vibe I got from the preview.

Obviously a cover story to protect MIB’s best agent.

    Indeed.

I've always suspected that MIB doesn't exist to protect humanity, but is in fact a betrayal of humanity. They do whatever the hell they feel like, without regard for the rule of law or anybody's rights. It's really no better than Trek's Section 31, when you think about it.

I mean, how else do you explain lines (in the original film) like "Human thought is so primitive it's looked upon as an infectious disease in some of the better galaxies." And this is a human character saying lines like that. :wtf: In any case, if MIB holds such a low opinion of humanity...why would they care about protecting it?

And, like you said, innocent bystanders are repeatedly subjected to having their memories erased, without their consent, and also without regard to any adverse effects this may have on their health...how does MIB know that repeated use of neuralyzers doesn't risk causing brain tumors or something like that?

Trailer looks interesting, and pretty faithful to the original concept.

Speaking of the original movies, I greatly enjoyed the third one, perhaps much more than I did the second one. I felt it was a pretty interesting way of keeping things fresh.

^ Agreed; and at least the second was merciful enough to be less than 90 minutes long. (DCEU, are you paying attention? Why the hell is Aquaman 142 minutes long?!) Indeed, I myself probably like the first one the least.

How so? I'm genuinely curious. Did we get any sense of the villain's character or plan? Does anyone think the reason Tessa's been looking for MiB for 20 years isn't because of absent daddy/mommy issues, just about the biggest cliche in the book? Is there any indication that Hemsworth will actually be playing a character, and not just an affable quip machine as in Ghostbusters '16? Did the overly-lit look of every scene or anything in the production design suggest even a hint of personality? I mean no offense, but while I can kinda see someone saying the preview looks entertaining enough, what the heck on Earth is interesting about it?!

    About. Bloody. Fraking. Time.

I knew that MIB was a global agency ever since the animated series (an episode shows K and J going to LA to find out who killed an alien actor, meeting up with the talent agency section of MIB); it's good to see a movie finally do this (I'd wanted to see a sequence in a movie similar to the first one in which a bunch of people from different countries are recruited). Movie looks great, and nice to see the two actors from the third Thor movie teaming up again.

Why shouldn't it have been? Who says a movie has to be so short?

I really don't have the need to revisit the MiB universe and this trailer did nothing to excite me. It's the usual recipe.. take a fan favorite older series, pick amongst the hottest current young A listers, sprinkle in some humor and SFX and voila..

I'm so tired of this formula and will skip this in the theatre and probably catch it when it hits Netflix.

The way I've always kind explained all this away was that what the MIB deals with on a daily basis is just so far beyond of what the average person deals with that there is just no way they could possibly handle it.

Perhaps. But the MIB could stand to be a LOT less condescending about it.

And they still haven't proven that repeated use of the neuralyzer doesn't cause lasting damage.

If MIB agents are going to subject innocent bystanders to a device like the neuralyzer, they have a responsibility to make sure it's not going to give people brain cancer or anything like that.

MIB claims to act in the defense of humanity, after all. So why would they want their technology to make humans sick and die? MIB has a moral, ethical and logical responsibility to make sure this does not occur.

It's a movie. Unless there's a plot reason, there's no need to address it.

Mr. Laser Beam, I actually agree with Nerys Myk on this particular point. I think the use of neuralyzers and generally keeping total secrecy from the rest of humanity is problematic as heck even without fanfic-ing about in-universe health risks the movies haven't even hinted at.

As I understand it, the source MiB comics were a lot darker and more cynical. In previous decades, as illustrated by much of The X-Files, shadowy government operations had a general cultural connotation of being up to no good. Ergo, when the first movie reconfigured that connotation and the tone of the comics to make the MiB straight-up heroes, that was not only a trope subversion but a bit of a joke in of itself. With each sequel and franchise extension, however, that implicit joke gets more and more lost, to the point where it may not exist at all anymore. And now that the franchise is itself a legacy one, old enough to harken back reverentially to its late-90s origins, I really don't have any hope for a new angle or take on the core concept.

I was never really that bothered by the secrecy aspect of the MIB, it's really the only way you can do stories like this in a real world setting. I've always gotten a kick out of the idea that there could be this whole secret world of aliens and things like that that exist alongside us that we know nothing about.
And some of the best jokes in the first movie at least, were based around the whole secrecy thing, like J thinking the human with Frank is the alien, the stuff with Edgar's wife, and the whole Jeebs scene.

I like the MIB series. The Torchwood concept done right. Hell, Dr Who could use some of MIB's style.

I hope Sony has something new to add this to around. Jumanji and Goosebumps 1 were solid. Ghostbusters 2016 and Goosebumps 2 stank.

Odds are, Sony will get their MIB reboot right just once.

Not really a reboot. A spin-off is more appropriate.
I just hope Liam Neeson isn't killed off, or the baddie.
