The Genesis Wave books

Noddy

Captain
What exactly is the status of this series within the wider Trek literature continuity? I've read that some aspects of them don't really mesh very well with what most other books establish.

The event was referenced in (I think) one of the ATT books. So they did occur, just maybe not exactly as portrayed.

TGW Books 1 & 2 (which tell a complete story in themselves) have been referenced in other novels. Book 3 contradicts the Titan series on the name and sex of the Ogawas' child.

Don't forget there was also Genesis Force which, as I recall, was intended to be part of another story that branched off from the Genesis Wave books where it explored the aftereffects of the trilogy---but no other books were released.

I’m 200 pages into book one. I’m enjoying it so far. Didn’t realise it was a post Insurrection story. I thought only the A Time To... covered that time.
I liked the twist they did on the device with that it does in fact work. Hopefully that means future ships will have at least one for terraforming needs.

The first two books in the series I thought were great books, almost on par with the Destiny series IMO. Book 3 reminded me a bit of "A Singulair Destiny" after "Destiny" in the sense that it seemed to clean things up after the events of the first 2 books. Genesis Force was an ok book, but I thought of it more as a coda. It wasn't really necessary but it wasn't a bad book.

But as for the novel continuity I generally look at the Genesis Wave books as an informal beginning to the relaunch series from TNG perspective. It was between Insurrection and Nemesis, but before the A Time To... books. It seemed to be the earliest books that were referred to in the current continuity as far as I can tell.

The last I saw any reference to the Genesis Wave was in TNG novel "Indistinguishable From Magic". Dr Brahms reappears there and there is a brief mention of the events of The Genesis Wave. But it's been several years, probably close to a decade in-universe and so much has happened since it's not really surprising Genesis hasn't been brought up recently. It's likely ancient history by now.

There's a quickie reference to the "Genesis disaster" in Articles of the Federation, when a pundit is listing all the stuff President Zife had to deal with after the Dominion War ended. Basically it was a listing of all the major events in the novels that took place after the war and before this novel..........

"Zife's second term saw one mess after another, from the collapse of the Trill government, to the gateways and Genesis disasters, to the brief war with the Selelvians and the Tholians, to the problems with the Ontalians, to Tezwa—culminating in the first presidential resignation in the Federation's history."

“Genesis Wave Book 1” takes place in 2376; Articles takes place in 2380. The Prey/Prometheus books are in mid-to late 2385, “Hearts And Minds” is in mid-2386. So story wise the Genesis Wave books are like saying that President Bush’s decision to start the second Gulf War is current news in 2018 when it’s been 17 years since that started.

Are you referring to the revelation in Chapter 14, the findings of the Starfleet classified reports about the device?

I need to revisit this series. I read the first three books more than a decade ago in an attempt to get into Treklit. I'm pretty sure I enjoyed the first one, thought the second one was ok, and really didn't care for the third book. My local library didn't have the fourth one, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have bothered with it at that point.

Now that I've read a couple of other books by John Vornholt that I liked, it may be time to give the original duology another chance.

I just finished the first book. It was one of the best Trek books I have read over the last couple of years - almost Battlestar Galactica good. A real pleasant surprise that felt like a blockbuster movie. It even made me really like Leah Brahms.

Oh, and it has Carol Marcus in it, who is in the top five female characters from the original era. Amazing.

The first two books are good but the third wasn’t great. Felt like a completely different story and it was all over the place. I still don’t really get how it connects to the genesis wave.

Interesting. I’ve other books I want to read before I get to book two, and I will decide after that if I want book three but I will consider it more of a spin off than a continuation

I finished the second novel, and wow that is like it was written by a different author than book one. It felt like there was 50 pages left in the story after book one, but it was stretched out for a full book. Very disappointing after the first novel being so good. I don't think I will bother now with the final two books in the series, but I would happily read another book with Leah Brahms by this writer if it was a new story.
