Surprisingly, after some searching on this board, I couldn't find a thread on this show.

Nightflyers, based on the novella of the same name from George R.R. Martin, is currently showing on SYFY in the USofA. Now, I'll admit I've not started to watch the series yet, It's piling up on my DVR for some serious binge watching this weekend. According to SYFY's website the series is

"Set in the year 2093, Nightflyers is a psychological thriller that follows a team of scientists aboard the Nightflyer, the most advanced ship ever built, as they embark on a journey to find other life forms. Their mission takes them to the edge of the solar system, and to the edge of insanity, as they realize true horror isn’t waiting for them in outer space—it’s already on their ship."

Anyone watching? Thoughts? Discuss.....

Nuts ... Could a Mod please fix the thread tile by removing the brackets and text for italics code? Thought it would work, but I guess it doesn't. Looks bad....

Thanks - Q2

I think we're going to watch an episode or two tonight. I love this kind of stuff but I haven't heard anything positive about Nightflyers yet and I haven't read the sirens material either.

The Nightflyer is supposedly trying to find certain aliens to help them save the dying Earth. But of course it isn't that simple. Is the telepath responsible for the creepy things happening in the Nightflyer? And that mechanical/maniacal spider! I've watched 2 episodes so far. It's a little gorier than I expected but I'm intrigued enough to watch another ep.

I’m now 5 episodes in and without getting spoilery, things are not as they initially appear. Curious blend of horror and sci-fi elements. It’s interesting, but not really my cup of tea. Not a big horror fan. Debating if I’m gonna finish the series. The sci-fi underpinnings is very interesting, but the ‘Shining’ isn’t really doing it for me.

Just finished it. Pretty bad all around. I really enjoyed hate watching it, though. The pacing is awful. The characters are even worse. There is an entire filler episode that adds absolutely nothing to the story but must have used up half the budget.

The special effects are terrible. GRRM should never let Syfy touch any of his properties again.

Apparently my DVR is recording them out of order - we tried to watch ep 3, but it was clearly a later ep. So we have to watch them on demand with commercials you can't FF thru. Whatever. In any case, it's interesting thru episode 3. I had just decided the captain was purely a software AI when he hit somebody.

SYFY is airing the episodes so often if you don't have the 'new episodes only' set on your DVR you end up with a whole jumbled mess!

I found it extra confusing because I had in my mind that the Volcryn race were supposed to be more directly involved in the story than they ultimately were.

BTW, if you slogged through this whole thing you might want to check out the 1987 movie. I found it interesting to see how they tackled this story 30 (sigh) years ago. The whole movie can be watched on Youtube, search for "Nightflyers 1987".

Just watched all 10 episodes in 1 day.

Yeah, I can see why this aired this on a daily basis, it would have been a huge challenge to get folks to figure it out after waiting a week between each episode.

It wasn't horrible, but it sure never rose to the level of good. The ending was pretty annoying, I thought I was going to watch a complete show. I didn't realize this was just season 1, with a sort of cliffhanger waiting for a possible second season renewal. (I say "sort of", because I think D'Branin actually got at least some of what he was looking for at the very end there. And if that's all the answer we're going to get, then so be it.)

They did throw some interesting sci-fi concepts into the show, I'll give 'em that. The captain in his bacta tank was cool, and the Volcryn at the very end was neat.

I like the idea that alien contact isn't going to be with a bunch of humanoids flying in a UFO or the Starship Enterprise. It's going to be something so far beyond us and so radically different from us that we have great trouble understanding, communicating, comprehending, etc.

Hmm, the more I think about it, I think I'm glad I watched it. It was a decent attempt at combining horror and sci-fi, and at least some of each element worked and was interesting.
