“Jean-Luc Picard is back”: will new Picard show eclipse Discovery?

It isn't? That's the saddest thing I've heard in some time...
It's still officially in the works but I've always been sceptical. I think the latest was that he wouldn't direct anyway, just write the script and produce.

Paramount can't seem to get Star Trek 4 of the ground so this one seems a way off.

Do you think it could mean chapter 11?

Viacom made $1.9 billion in profit last year. It's not going bankrupt. The chaos comes from 1) the succession fights at high levels (though I think Shari Redstone has won that one) and 2) uncertainty as how to organize the company and its subsidiaries. Moonves (who was also competing with Ms. Redstone for the top job) pushed hard to keep CBS separate. Now that he's #MeToo'd himself into early retirement? Who knows.

There's chaos, but they've got the cash flow to let it run its course.

Given that DSC is trying to create the context of a Star Trek show, i think it does that to a greater or lesser extent depending on how you look at it. In some ways it does fall back on established Trek tropes and iconography. In other ways I think it wildly misses the mark in what I suspect to be an attempt at innovation. I think it’s not successful enough in each case.

But that’s just my twopence worth :)

I think a lot of that boils down "Brian Singer did all this stuff before he bailed on us. We don't really like it, but it's already paid for and we still have deadlines. So let's roll with it to start off, but slowly turn this into what we really want".

And then they kinda shit the bed on the transition and spent a whole season talking about goddamn magic mushrooms.

Just to avoid confusion, you mean "Bryan Fuller."

Bryan Singer is the X-MEN and SUPERMAN RETURNS guy.

Great news everybody!!

The Picard-show will be filming in back in California!

http://trekcore.com/blog/2018/12/star-trek-picard-series-filming-california-kurtzman-comments/

I already made a new thread in the general forum for that:
https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/picard-series-shooting-in-california-new-trek-studios.297287/

But that's also GREAT news for Discovery: Because so far, every planet on Discovery has been either a studio set, or just outside in the Canadian forest or the quarrie. With a new Trek show filming concurrently in California, that means Star Trek has it's access back to traditional Trek shooting locations like Kirk's Rock or the traditional Starfleet Academy. Each show can now fly it's actors to the filming locations of the other show, and film with the crew and equitpment at hand!

That hopefully means a lot more, cheaper and more geographically diverse filming locations for each show, which hopefully amounts to much more, stranger and more different alien planets to visit every other week!

Sir Patrick must have bent Them over backward to get that concession.
Canada is giving the production companies way more tax breaks than California.
I would imagine at his age the thought of doing all that flying back and forth was going to be a big No-No in his contract negotiations.

Having all the shows filming in one location would have saved CBS a chit-ton of money.
Now They will have Discovery in Canada; Picard Trek in Calif; and the cartoon being drawn in Asia somewhere...
CBS All Access better make a bunch of money off or Trek or we may see the end of it all together what with Paramount not being able to get their collective heads outta Their butts!

Hey, you really want someone for a part? You make them happy. Plus given his age, I think they figured they'd rather have him taking a short chauffeured ride, as opposed to numerous flights to Canada on a regular basis to get to a studio location.
