Wasn't it a big deal a few years ago because the Original Trilogy was going be shown in China for the first time?

I know. As I said: there are Death Star-sized cultural differences between our two nations, which means that reading China's response to Aquaman for domestic box-office predictions is about as sensible as reading chicken guts.

No, not really. Especially since tracking for the US opening here is about 100 million dollars.

Comparing superhero franchises here and there, I wouldn't be surprised if, for the most part, there was a lot of the same cross cultural appeal.

There's certainly been enough superhero hits and mega-hits over the past few years, even conventionally unlikely ones such as GotG, Deadpool, and Venom, that no rational person should be surprised if Aquaman hits a home run. But if our fellow Yanks do embrace the movie, it assuredly won't be because they've seen headlines about it doing well in China, thus igniting in them a burning curiosity to see what the Middle Kingdom's latest box office hit all about. ;)

This would be the third live-action version of the character, and once again he's a mob enforcer.

I'm kind of surprised he's become so popular with modern adaptations, since he doesn't really seem to be that big of a deal in the comics.

Well, he's not a mob enforcer in the comics. Batman comics nowadays seem to be more about the epic rather than the dark pulp detective stories that the psycho serial killer Mr. Zsasz worked so well in. I kinda miss those days.

You'd think that even in a world where DC loves realism over good stories at times, that a more accurate version of Zsaz wouldn't be that big an issue. They could totally do a Seven style Batman story with Zsaz, and it could be as "realistic" or unrealistic as they wanted and still work well, although it might be too "small" of a story for a motion picture.

Just saw Aquaman advert and you know one thing DC crushes Marvel on...

    Soundtracks :techman:

Man of Steel's theme is stunning for me, Wonder Woman's is great too and the music from Aquaman's marketing, which I presume is the main score of the film is just that sort of brilliant epic music that really draws you into the action and story.

I don't know, Marvel has Alan Silvestri's fantastic Avengers theme, and ...

    ...

Well, they got the Avengers theme.

Cristophe Beck's Ant-man theme is one of the best in the genre. The GotG score in general was an incredible return (for me) to a kind of sci-fi music that I hadn't heard in movies in over a decade (really, it was one of my main joys the first time I saw the movie in theaters, and I usually don't even notice film music the first time around). Thor Ragnarok's theme was incredible, Dr. Strange's theme is delightfully weird and actually is the thing that pulled me over the line and convinced me to go see that movie in theaters. And I'm also quite partial to both Captain America themes and the Michael Giaccino Spider-man theme. Black Panther I think made a bit of a splash as well.

And for the record - I would never besmirch Zimmer's Man of Steel or the Wonder Woman theme, but let us also not forget the unbearably pompous pile of dung that Zimmer gave us for the BvS score. And Suicide Squad and Justice League weren't exactly musically thrilling, either, so I'd say the jury's still pretty out on the DCEU music, as well.

It's a shame Gotham went with the mob hit man version, because that could have been a great episode or arc on there.

Well, I also like Silvestri's Captain America theme.

And I've always liked Brian Tyler heme for Iron Man 3, but I understand that your mileage may vary on that.

But, yeah, I largely agree that Marvel scores have been forgettable.

I guess I went a little OTT but the DC music really sticks in my mind though I will grant GoG out of any Marvel/DC film is the best in this department by making the soundtrack feel like part of the story and not just an add on.

Granted, my judgement was based more on which themes I could actually remember, as in humming in my head. GotG has a great soundtrack, but the songs overshadow the score, and Silvestri's Cap theme might have been more memorable if Marvel had used it more beyond the first movie.

To be fair, Suicide Squad has the same problem as GotG with the songs overshadowing the score, and I was greatly disappointed in Danny Elfman on JL for not delivering a truly memorable theme. Like, seriously disappointed. He could have just done an adaptation of the animated show's title theme, even YouTube people could do that:

Justice League should of left the original composer in but then again it seems Justice League should of left in, a lot of original ideas.

Aquaman reviews are coming out and last I checked it was at 72% on RT.

Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" would like a word with you. :)
