I quite enjoyed this episode though I did feel the story would have worked just as well if it had been a Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode.

This is the sort of things that happens when I post before breakfast and before my first cup of coffee. Australians can stream the show at 6am Australian time.

I have edited my post to change it to Slayer :)

It was emotionally draining for me, but it was brilliant.

I do love the mad woman with a box.

I suppose if a sentient universe that has been on its own since the dawn of time is calling you mad, you might be a bit bonkers.

I'm less certain about the whole idea of anti-zones and solar (Sole? Soul? Not sure what The Doctor said) tracks, but I liked how the existence of this conscious universe was rooted in The Doctor's childhood stories from her fifth gram (she had eight!), which is a nice callback to previous beings and ideas that existed in The Doctor's childhood only for her/him to encounter them later on in life (I can't think of a specific example but I know this has happened before).

The Toclafane and the hand reaching out from under the bed spring to mind. I think there may be others even from the classic series.

Anyway onto this episode, which I didn't think was good...I thought it was fantastic! Easily the most complete episode of the season, can't believe we've had to wait till episode 9 to see it. Creepy, funny, heart-breaking. Riffing on things we've seen many times before yet totally original at the same time. Great performances and plot holes you can probably drive a truck through (seriously what father would fake monsters like that!). Basically everything you want from Who.

I thought that was perhaps Jodie's finest performance so far, at least for me, and she 100% felt like the Doctor. Loved that Ryan's attitude was infected by his own father running out on him, so that's where he defaulted to when Hanne's(sp?) father was gone. The thing is it was still creepy even after we knew there was no monster. Ribbons was delightfully creepy, and though yet again there was no real "enemy" I thought this worked really well. I guess some people might balk at the frog, but as has been said, how do you depict an entire universe? A frog makes as much sense as anything else, and for all the people mentioning Susan and former Doctors, why would you do that? If they were going to bring back Susan the perfect time was season 10 because 12 had a picture of her on his desk, you're just going to confuse the majority of viewers wondering who this old woman is if you get Carole Ann Ford. You could have got David, Matt or Peter of course (incredibly doubtful) but why would you? No this is a new Doctor working on a blank slate, the last thing you need is a call back many viewers won't get.

Walsh killed it as usual, and I loved that final scene where Ryan called him granddad...no you've got something in your eye.

Yet again Yaz feels a trifle superfluous though, which us a shame. I like the actress but she needs something beyond "I was a police woman and my family are annoying"

Anyway, loved it. Ed Haim can come back anytime and write another episode as far as I'm concerned.

I was utterly bored this time. That's new. I haven't been bored watching Series 11 until now. Maybe not as excited as during Series 6, but not bored.

There's nothing particularly wrong with the writing or acting, mind you, but I dearly miss Murray Gold. His music was how I connected to the show on an emotional level. Without that everything is ... empty, like one of Reginald Barclay's hologram fantasies.

Thanks for the reminder. I'm pretty there's at least one from the classic series. I want to say something with The Fourth Doctor. I guess the vampires count but that's not what I'm thinking of.

Gods, no. I don't miss his music at all. Some of his softer touches were gold, but far too much of it was over-the-top bombastic crap. I'm loving Segun Akinola's completely different take and this episode was no exception.

A friendly sapient universe, looking for a friend?

Boring.

They are bringing back the dead, and we didn't get to see an old companion from a few seasons or decades ago?

That factory girl from last week or Lynda with a frickin' Y, or Adrik even.

That was a great episode. I was a bit thrown off by the frog, but I don't think there was any way it would have worked with anything other than a wtf moment. The reversed image in the "mirror" universe was a nice touch.

Of course the best part of the episode is without a doubt..."But at least we got each other eh?......Grandad."

A couple things I forgot to mention that I loved about the episode:

Graham always leaves the TARDIS with a pickle and cheese sandwich. You can never be too prepared! Somehow, I think Douglas Adams would be proud.

"You want us to follow that nutter?" "No! I want you to follow this nutter!"

Don't know about where @matthunter saw it but it's in the subtitles.
Ah, right, of course. I keep forgetting to turn those on.

Yeah, that was a great moment. People have been wondering how long it would take for Ryan to say that and now we know.

loved the episode. And Graham's feeling of grief was so strong that the Solatrac chose Grace's favourite animal and her voice as it's form.

The trailer for next week doesn't show it, but in the Next Time bit of the episode wasn't that voice -

Okay forget that - I put something in spoiler code but it just didn't come out!!!

I desperately want to skip this episode, it sounds just as boring as every other poorly written snore fest this season. But I won't, because Chibnail isn't going to beat me. I outlasted post burn out Moffat and Andrew Cartmel, Chibnail doesn't have the skill to be as bad as those two. Still, this is going to end up being the first series/season in the entire franchise without a single good episode. Even Series 8 and every year of the 7th Doctor's era managed at least one solidly good to great episode/story, but there hasn't been a single episode of this season that I'd rewatch. Heck, there hasn't even been one that I don't regret watching. Chibnail sure is the kind of boring garbage. I'd rather be angry at something then bored, although to be fair all the boredom is starting to really piss me off so I guess that means I am starting to develop an emotional response to the series, although not a particularly positive one.

I think there has been 6 good episodes this season so far, including this one. and the other 3 have been average.

This was a proper weird and high-concept! Loved this episode. Creepy in places, high-concept about death, mourning and replacement. GRAHAM! So good. Stealing the show. Jodie over the past two episodes has definitely "Come into the Doctor" for those who felt she was more passive. I felt her key differences - more delighted by things, even the bad things then 10 or 11 would be, kinder as 12 charged her to be. Probably my second favorite of the season behind "Rosa." Ryan was great. He could have used one more scene with the girl. Hannah was great, if she needed something else to do.

Mirrors as doorways to remorse and hanging on to the past at risk of destroying your present is something else as a metaphor.

As with others, the frog was maybe the only sticking point. I get it. I don't dislike it. But it's somewhat corny. Would have liked Yas to do more. The anti-zone was a good misdirect. But there was a sort of 90s syndicated tv show feel about it. And the make up on Ribbons reminded me of a Reman. Love the subtle hinting that the lantern is made of flesh.

Let's get more non-Chibnall scripts in 2019.

:rolleyes: :lol::shrug:

That was really good! Maybe 2nd on my list this season. Very cool concept, Jodie was great (with a lot of dialogue).

-1 for the frog, which made me bust out laughing at the most intense point.
