Should there be an antagonist in the Picard show? If yes, who should it be?

I like the idea (I have mentioned it before) of seeing what happened to the Romulan Empire after Romulus was destroyed, with the Romulan Empire split into 2 factions, one peaceful that wants to unite with the Vulcans, while the other faction is militaristic, annexing pre warp planets to gain more resources and thinking the other faction should be destroyed.

This would allow to develop the Romulans, having sympathetic and villainous Romulans and seeing the normally arrogant Romulans having to be humble refugees on Vulcan. Picard trying to create a final peace between the Federartion and the Romulans would be interesting.

    Premise for the series:-
Picard, long since retired from Starfleet and in his last few weeks as a Federation Ambassador, is informed that a Cardassian war criminal has been apprehended, one he knows very well: Gul Madred.

After the teaser for the initial episode, the entire series is just Picard and Madred, in a room, facing off against one another in a battle of wits.

I'd love to see them go in a direction that does not rely on an antagonist.

    LOL!!! There.... are... 4 lights!!!

I believe it has to be John De Lancie, the ending moments of "All Good Things..." still ring in my head where Q bends down to say something in his ear, and rises back not telling anything. "You'll find out. See you... out there!!!" Gosh I wish the movies were more like what Q emphasized, but now it's up to this Picard series.

Now in a role reversal, with Picard torturing and asking Madred "How many lights are there??" and Madred keeps replying "There....Are.... FOUR....LIGHTS!!":hugegrin::lol::lol:

^ Was thinking more along the lines of them sitting opposite one another, Picard showing Madred how much more civilised the Federation is, whilst still seething under the surface at what was done to him all those years ago. It'd be an intense series, one focused on character and not spectacle or space battles, giving both Patrick Stewart and David Warner a chance to delve into the dynamic between them, the horrors of war and torture, and testing just how advanced humans really are.

Conflict yes, but please no "BIG BAD." Nearly all the best Star Trek is about more complex situations than X wants to destroy our worls/ship/way of life.

How about bringing back the likes of Pressman, Maxwell, Kennelly ("Ensign Ro") or Rossa. These are a few of the Starfleet admirals or captains that Picard crossed or screwed over during the course of the series. They may want some payback against Picard.

I would especially like to see Admiral Rossa again. We never got a follow up to the story of "Suddenly Human".

Picard denied Adm. Rossa the right to reunite with her grandson Jono. I can only imagine that Adm. Rossa would have been infuriated with Picard, and that she might have used her rank and influence as admiral to make Picard pay for his action. I wish there had been a follow up episode to "Suddenly Human".

If you go down the political intrigue route, then there should be an intellectual foil for Picard. Be it an opposing political person within Starfleet - or another species/member planet of the Federation Picard is trying to expose.

Whatever the situation, I think it needs to be on an intellectual level, with other forces surrounding the two of them. Not in terms of physical threat or weaponry, but someone/something that threatens the ideas and beliefs of Picard.

If we go down this route, then the foil needs to be on Picard's level. Not some brutish push over that gives Picard no competition.

If their contest is to be a protracted one, then there needs to be situations when the opponent defeats Picard on a level playing field.

I want more of a "Buried Age" feel to the series rather than 'Prof. X from Logan' or any political intrigue. Picard out in the galaxy working an archeology mystery, ancient (or returned) aliens, maybe a threat to the galaxy. Feels like that's another way for him to shine, but without the whole Starfleet wrapper...

Can have a mystery or threat, but don't want another 'bad buy'. Trek movies went downhill when TNG started insisting that each movie needed a big bad; our heroes against a mystery or crisis was always enough

Talking of Romulans, could they get the lady who played Donatra in Nemesis to come back?

She could be a friend turned villain type character - she and Picard may have gone for that drink he promised her, leading to a diplomatic relationship that soured when Romulus was destroyed.

This would be a nice link to established canon too... even if it is Nemesis...

I'll say also that regardless of which series you like, think of the best episodes. City on the Edge of Forever, Inner Light, In the Pale Moonlight, so on and so forth. With very few exceptions, there's no Bad Guy in that episode. A few like Space Seed, or Best of Both Worlds are notable exceptions, I suppose, but most of the time, it wasn't about fighting the bad guy, it was about mystery, exploration, forces of nature, human condition, that stuff. No mustache twirling required. Not that Cardassians, Klingons, Kazon, or whatever didn't have their moments, but your favorite episodes probably didn't include them if you think back on it. And plenty of forgettable ones DID include them

People will yell at me for this but if there is an antagonist it should be Picard's greatest enemy, the Borg.
