Nicholas Meyer Discusses Discovery

I thought Protomatter got a mention in DS9?
You're right. Quick survey of Memory Alpha shows appearances in DS9 (at least 3 times, once in a science experiment) and in VOY. More interesting to note in VOY is the fact that it naturally occurred in a nebula.

Edit: Ninja'd.

Star Trek always has these super complicated doomsday devices, when you can just slam a big asteroid into a planet and destroy it.

Asteroids are just big piles of rocks, usually on very different orbits than planets, and very, very slow because of the whole sub-light thing.

Chances are, a futuristic society has an advanced asteroid-observation program (hell, we have a semi-functioning one now). Actually changing the trajectory of an asteroid to hit a planet would take 1) massive amounts of energy to move the asteroid to a different orbit and 2) take months to years for it to actually come close to the planet, if wasn't already on a collision course. Both of these things are not good if you don't want to be stopped on half-way. Using a futuristic superweapon is very reasonable. Asteroids are more logical if you don't want to hide your attacks, but without a high chance of actually succeeding.

Really? All you have to do is warp in, tractor it and drag it to the planet. And it'll hit the planet with far more kinetic energy than one that would hit naturally.

They just need something heavy/dense and moving really fast.

Heavy/dense + moving fast = needs a lot of energy

If one ship with a traktor beam can muster enough energy to hurl it fast at a planet, one ship with another tractor beam can stop it. If you need one SUPER strong ship which can hurl more mass faster towards a planet than any other ship can stop it: Congratulations. You build yourself a super complicated doomsday device...

Well, specifically, she said "every ethical scientist in the galaxy..." which probably discounts Klingon scientists, who would be under the thumb of the warrior class.

Actually, don't we find out in Enterprise that their scientists are about the only ethical Klingons in the Empire?

Even in Star Trek II the destructive power of the Genesis device isn't remarked upon so much as its ability to recreate something else in its place. Presumably a culture like the Klingons would already have planet destroying weapons - genesis wasn't that useful for that, it was powerful because it could wipe out an enemy world and leave in its place a planet ready for habitation by the conqueror.

I find it's good to watch those kinda videos occasionally, just to remind myself what NOT to become like.
And we should never completely ignore the troublemakers/trolls, they have to be slapped upside the head every now and then, to also remind them that the world doesn't only spin in their direction.

When they completely ignore the fact that CBS has 4 or 5 other Trek projects lined up to be broadcast in the next couple of years, it really takes away any credence to their statements.

Broadcast company's DO NOT continue to toss large sums of money at projects that are not making them a significant return.

And this particular video rant is especially weird since other than the two recent shorts, there hasn't been any significant New Trek broadcast in over six months, which the company can use for a current evaluation.
That and the fact that DISCOVERY TREK is still one of the highest viewed shows on International Netflix, really makes these kind of videos nothing more than an obvious disgruntled and long winded rant.

It will be Fun Time! I'm going watch this for fun. I'm setting up a Fanboy Game. The more stereotypically fanboy, the more points awarded.

"He has a source over at Star Trek: Discovery who says that there are emergency meetings going on today" --> 20 points

"The fact that Discovery is an abomination of 50 years of boldy going where no one has gone before didn't do them or us any favors!" --> 5 points

"We'd still pay for Star Trek if it were real Star Trek!" --> 10 points

"Kill off Michael Burnham, which I think would be a really good start. You could probably win a lot of people over doing that." --> 20 points

"Doomcock's source is pretty reliable." --> 5 points

"Because STD hasn't been well received, despite critics giving positive reviews who I'm sure weren't paid at all by CBS to say nice things about their show..." --> 10 points for calling it "STD", 20 points for saying critics were paid, for a combined total of 30 points

"Compare that to The Orville" --> 10 points

"CBS definitely paid for views to trick investors just like they paid for positive reviews" --> I can't decide between 10 or 20, he loses some for piggy-backing on what he said earlier, so I'll go with 15 points

Then he reads comments from the peanut gallery, which I won't include in his tally.

So, that's a Grand Total of... 115 points!

"Compare that to The Orville"

Oh god, not that again. Jesus. This is why I steer clear of these sorts of videos.

(The pushy insecurity of Orville fans has also done more to put me off watching that show than the actual show has done. And it's not horrible, based on the couple episodes I saw, but it sure ain't great and certainly isn't worth this stupid rivalry they keep pushing.)

I humbly point you in the direction of the STD Short Treks which CBS couldn't sell to anyone for so much as a solitary dollar.

Since Netflix doesn't issue viewing figures for shows on its service, please provide hard evidence that Discovery is one the highest viewed shows on Netflix.

Yeah, true... but they're also lower-class / lower-power / lower-prestige citizens...so likely their opinion on Protomatter wouldn't matter to the Empire, and certainly wouldn't be known beyond their boarders.

Stop with logic and reason. It doesn't become a typical genre fan.

It's interesting that you say this...because I kind of feel the same way, and it's entirely subconscious (at least, up until now). I mildly enjoyed Orville for what it was, and had no ill-will or complaints about it, other than that it was low-brow and stupid...but it was kind of MEANT to be that...so I enjoy it for what it is and it's fun as such.

But, it's become such a thorn people use to jab in DSC fans sides, it's actually soured me on it.

This point cannot be overstated. I know there is a need for hard evidence but this is the most telltale.

Same here. It's an interesting show in its own right but it has become a 2x4 of comparison against Discovery so it loses its luster.

I've never understood people's obsessive need to prove that something they don't like is failing. People used to do the same thing back in 2009 with the first Kelvin movie. No measure was good enough. Critical acclaim? Nope. Good box office? Nope. Promise of a sequel? Nope.

DSC isn't met quite that ridiculously, but you see the same tired, insecure "bring me another rock" tactics. It's like people can't be comfortable with simply letting it go at "I don't like it." They have to build a feeling of belonging and security by trying to prove that everyone else really agrees with them as well.

It makes no sense. Who the hell cares? If you don't like it...who gives a shite if you're in the minority? I love Star Trek V. I don't deny all the logical evidence that indicates that I'm in the vast minority on that opinion, and that the film was generally considered a failure. I simply continue loving it and I accept that I have different tastes than other people. Doesn't change how I feel one bit.

I love the amount of thought that went into this. Very amusing!
