Current status of the subculture of "Trekkies"???

Is the trekkie subculture dying?

The reason I think Star Trek will definitely continue to be around for a long time in some form is the dominance of remake culture.

In the year 2050, what do you think TV/movie/VR program producers are going to do? Come up with original ideas? Or rehash another Star Trek series with modern sensibilities?

@Kerock , Cool photo , always wanted to go to a comic con but never have time. Doesn't help that i started college a year early. Id probably be that guy in the gray shirt.

You know you can flip the question? The Q aren't restricted by time. Trelane might be Q's son. Even the one we would see in Season 7 of "Voyager." He did mention he had problems with discipline with him when he pawned him off on Auntie Janeway. The mom of course would be the one we saw in season 3 were they touched fingers and conceived him.

Benifited.. Current set of friends are trek watchers. ( met because of Gundam!) Made me the person who I am, tend to think Picard was a 2nd Dad to me ( Had a great first one too!) gave me my morals rudder, made me question everything, explore and build.
Burden.. Hmm, sometimes being treated as a nerd, especially in the 80's, social circle in school was pretty small. wasn't talking about Debbie Gibson.. i guess.. :)
How.. My dad, he had most of the first season on VHS, and watched it over and over. When it was remastered in the 00's I was like what is this extra stuff?? ( original run 52 minutes, vhs.. egh 45 or so becuase of comercials.. was blown away!)
Less.. hmm.. Well if the series becomes more "Destaturated" in that it starts looking like everything else, and not its own thing of Optomism, Hope, Science, etc. Then it might not go away, but not get any new fans.
Worst episode.. I like spocks brain.. Probably that hippie one.. haven't watched that in Decades.

On Gate Keeping. On a personal story, I got in to model building, but I built sci fi stuff, and all the local clubs built planes, or armour, ships etc. and poo poo'd my sci fi, saying "its not a real model, your not a real modeler etc" wasn't till I moved to Florida, and seeing a few models to Tables full in contests..

1. Allowed me to meet other star trek fans here and as I go to conventions, that is where I meet some people from Starfleet International, where I am a part of the USS Tyidirium. Been involved with SFI for over 5 years.
2. Nope.
3. It just happened over 25 years ago.
4. Not sure, but I know there are people still joining fan associations.
5. No idea.
6. Patrick Stewart
7. Nope
8. There are a few. The Enterprise finale was pretty bad.
9. Trekbbs and facebook.

  1. How has being a "trekkie" benefited you?
I got to meet some interesting people online. I've interacted with some of the production personnel on boards like this. Behind-the-scenes stories gave me insight into TV and film-making, which is a benefit to me since I make independent films.

  2. How has it been a burden if at all?
It occupied too much of my time when I was younger. But if it wasn't Star Trek, it would've been something else. Anime, for instance. Which I'm also a fan of.

  3. Why did you become a trekkie?
I liked the shows and the films. I have my favorites (TOS and DSC) but the only one I outright didn't like was ENT.

  4. Why might be the main reason for trekkies becoming less of their own thing?
I don't know that they're becoming less their own thing so much as there are other options out there. The Doctor Who fans in America today probably would've been TNG fans 25 years ago.

  5. Where do you see them going in 5,10,20 yrs.
As more people pick up CBS All Access, more people will see DSC and subsequent series. Thanks to Netflix, people have been streaming other Star Trek shows and many, for the first time, are venturing out beyond just TOS and TNG.

  6. Who would you say was the most influential person(outside of Gene Roddenberry, and staff or actors) you don't have to answer this one
Bjo Trimble. She headed the Save Star Trek Campaign back in 1968. TOS never had 100 episodes but without a third season, there wouldn't have even been 65. The third season put them at 79. Not the ideal number for strip-syndication but enough to get by.

  7. Is there anything that makes you want to not be a trekkie?
Trekkies complaining about stupid things. Not being able to let go of ridiculous things. And feeling like they have to follow a Star Trek series they don't like and bashing it constantly instead doing what a normal person would do and move on.

  8. What was the worst episode in the OG series in your opinion if any ( this ones for fun)
Original Gangsta? I don't know if you want to use that abbreviation in a school paper. But I thought the worst episode of TOS was "And the Children Shall Lead". It's painful to watch. "Spock's Brain" and "The Way to Eden" are at least fun.

  9. What's the trekkies primary source of communication these days?
The Internet. I can only speak for myself but TrekBBS is my primary source for communication about Star Trek. For about 10 years (2007-2017), I wasn't posting here that much. So it was mostly Facebook posts during that period. But, as I discovered Discovery (no pun intended), I thought it would make more sense to post here than to bombard my non-Trekkie friends with a bunch of posts about how great I think DSC is. So that's what brought me back to TrekBBS as a regular poster.

Trekkie Subculture with all its role playing and imagination is giving way to the Virtual Gamer's universe and the millennial subculture of being always connected.

I have never met a Trekkie in the wild. Nor do I do consider myself one. I have an image in my head, mostly from what I saw in a documentary, but I have no context so I don't know if it is accurate.

I think I fall into "the masses come to Star Trek" category. And, I imagine that there are a lot of people that got into ST through Netflix, as I did. I am kind of the opposite of the Trekkie stereotype but am here as a semi regular poster. I think people like me may wind up diluting the meaning of 'trekkie', but there will always be a core group that remains. And I am glad for it, they offer a unique perspective that enriches the ST community as a whole.

I don’t know any other Trekkies in person. In that way, I think maybe diehard fans have remained a confined group. There’s definitely still a divide between us and them.

Trekkie is more a stereotype than a real set of people. I know some people are super into this show, but even those who've seen it all multiple times aren't walking around their homes in Starfleet uniforms or saying 'live long and prosper' instead of 'goodbye'. I think what people generally think of when they picture a 'Trekkie' has translated more to the Star Wars fandom at this point.

As for the Trek subculture, I think it's aging rather than dying. When I first started watching, Trek was one of the best TV shows ever. I definitely wouldn't say that now.

I think the stereotypical "Trekkie"--an obsessive, basement-dwelling virgin whose entire life revolves around Star Trek--is like Bigfoot. He may well exist, but I'm not sure I've ever encountered one in real life. :)

Most of the Trekkies I know have kids, mortgages, careers, and diverse other interests.

(Says the guy who has STAR TREK ornaments hanging our tree as I type this.)

Hey Trekkers are normal everyday people. Just because one likes other interests doesn't mean you can't be a Trekker. Now don't get me started though on those weirdo , Trekkies!
