THR| 'Pacific Rim' and 'Altered Carbon' Anime Projects Among Netflix's New Slate of Asian Originals

The Hollywood Reporter said:
Pacific Rim. Returning to the epic battle of Kaiju and Jeagers, this original anime series will expand upon the story of the first two live action movies and follow two siblings — an idealistic teenage boy and his naïve younger sister — who are forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger across a hostile landscape in a desperate attempt to find their missing parents. Co-showrunners: Craig Kyle (Thor: Ragnarok) and Greg Johnson (X-Men: Evolution). Production Company: Legendary Entertainment (Kong: Skull Island; Pokemon: Detective Pikachu).

While a third theatrical feature is more than unlikely at this point, I'm glad that there's some continuation of the franchise. And with it being an anime, it's kind of come full circle.

As long as it's not too kiddie-fied, I'll give it a shot. I'm quickly losing interest in SW:Resistance as it seems far more for kids than even Rebels did.

Just read this and i'm excited.. i love Pacific Rim and this seems like a good solution (also yay for Altered Carbon.. both live action in production and the anime).

Yeah.. Star Wars Resistance doesn't blow me away yet. It's nice and entertaining but far too constrained by just taking place on that station.. i hope they branch out sooner or later and make it more exciting.

Very cool, I'm a huge fan of both movies, and I'll gladly take any expansion of the franchise they'll give us.

I don't think Pacific Rim is really seen as a kids franchise as much as Star Wars is, so I doubt they'll kiddify this to much.

Well, lots of movies that weren't for kids at all have had kid-oriented animated spinoffs -- even RoboCop, Rambo, The Toxic Avenger, Police Academy, and Highlander.

Craig Kyle and Greg Johnson have written a lot of animated shows geared at young viewers, but some more adult stuff as well. And Netflix has programming at all age levels. So it's hard to say what level they'll go for here.

I always forget about all the kids cartoons based on adult oriented movies, but they haven't done that kind of thing in a while.

For R-rated movies, no, but Pacific Rim is much more family-friendly to begin with, so it wouldn't be as great a stretch to do a somewhat younger-skewing TV series.

Still, the fact that they're going with an anime studio to produce it suggests that maybe they're skewing older, since anime has a reputation for being more mature than US animation (or rather, having a wider age range that includes more mature shows as well as children's shows).

Dang it. Now I may have to resubscribe to Netflix. I already subscribe to a half dozen streaming services... Grr.

I think this is a good idea. I'm glad that the studio still sees some value in the Pacific Rim franchise. It's such a cool idea and I'm glad it's being expanded.
