I think there is a greater amount of confidence in Abrams than in others.
Reading that article, my impression was that Oscar isn't saying that they're deviating from the Episode IX script in a way that hasn't been done for previous SW films, I got the impression that what he was saying is that there's a little more freedom for the actors to take different approaches to the script's material each time they go through a take of a scene (similar to what both Martin Freeman and Ian Holm did with their performances of the character of Bilbo on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, respectively).
Why are you so cynical about everything?
The idea that "they don't care anymore," whoever "they" are, is a non-starter.
On the other hand, the idea that everyone involved in EpIX cares a great deal, enough to put forward their best professional efforts, if for no other reason than to further their own careers, is infinitely more believable.
If memory serves the rumours tended to get more in number and overall more accurate the further into the prequel trilogy we got so credit to Disney for bucking that trend at least. I doubt they are going to be able to sit on a movie this size till christmas (in terms of spoilers) but hats off to them if they do manage to keep it under wraps. I hadn't even realised they had started shooting.
For speculation I expect a redemption arc for that evil bb-8 droid they kept trying to sell in stores.

It just occurred to me that even if I do end up enjoying “Episode IX”, it’s too late. I didn’t like “TFA”. Despite Boyega, Ridley, Ford and Mayhew in the middle of the film (the only part I really enjoyed), the movie was too much a rehash of “ANH” to me. As for “TLJ", I thought it was a major disappointment. Why? Because I thought Rian Johnson would do better than that … especially after seeing “Looper”. Two out of three movies that are misses with me? Forget it. Hopefully, I’ll enjoy “Episode IX”. But as a whole, I found the Sequel Trilogy to be a waste of my time.
I think you ought to give the Sequel Trilogy a second chance once it's completed, if not before, because I didn't like TFA all that much myself but gave it a second chance and enjoyed it more than I did the first time.
TFA is... ok. It's got it's problems (chiefly originality) but it's a decently paced adventure I suppose if not a lot else.

Overall so far the sequel films haven't done anything for me. They seem to lack a sense of purpose and direction and are just retreading old ground in the main. Episode 9 needs to be spectacular to even come close to turning things around.
RO however I found to be an awesome SW movie, right behind ANH & ESB in my rankings. Solo was a very enjoyable romp also.

I think this kinda sums it up. If TFA hadn't been a Star Wars film, it probably would have been moderately popular and then faded away. I'd say the exact same is true of JJ's Star Trek reboot. Watched it. Enjoyed it. Never really felt the need to rewatch it.
I've seen both "TFA" and "TLJ" more than once. I'm keeping my mind open for "Episdoe IX". But as for the entire trilogy . . . I'm sorry. It's just too late. I don't see how a trilogy can be saved with one film, if you don't like the other two.
While I did dislike aspects of TLJ, I think that Rian Johnson is a good writer/director and would love to see his Star Wars trilogy. I didn't think he was right for episode 8, but if he was allowed to work freely on an extension of Star Wars he could be successful.
I guess I'm the odd one out because my family and I have rewatched both multiple times, especially TFA.
At least ST09 had a fairly original concept and story. It's probably JJ's best film.
Time travel is the most overused trope in Star Trek. There was nothing original about it.
I keep getting it set up and then realise I don’t really care that much. Maybe the difference is family? I’m assuming that means you and your kids? For all TFA’s shortcomings, it does at least strike me as a great movie to watch as a family, much like Back to the Future or Indiana Jones. Can’t think of many movies that really hit that mark.
The story didn’t seem that original, and all the characters were just reboots...
It might be an overused trope in Trek terms, but as a way to reboot the movie series whilst simultaneously linking it to the past without erasing it, it was a stroke of genius in my view. It was fresh and exciting, something you couldn't say about the movie series for a long time.
