No Christmas Special, May Be New Year's Day?

It's being reported by some media outlets that there may be no Christmas Special this year.

As usual until an official announcement (which will be unlikely to be made by the BBC until the end of this series) this is mainly conjecture.

I do agree however that after over twelve years although it has become a tradition, it is getting a little harder to seamlessly fit Christmas into the storyline. But also Christmas Day itself seems to be becoming overloaded with Christmas Specials of almost every programme out there, so maybe New Years deserves to get some of the love.

Twice Upon a Time is hardly Christmas-y at all, anyway. The only Christmas element was that WWI truce. Even The Unquiet Dead had more of a Christmas tone compared to that.

But I am saddened to see that spot missed. I hope we get a New Year's at least.

Yes there is a Dr Who Xmas Special. It's been filming, it's got internal and other documentation describing it as such (for example on the director's and editor's portfolios) and it will air in the Xmas holidays.

All the Mirror (which started this story) has picked up on is that Chibnall hasn't confirmed that it will air on Xmas Day - because the production team don't make the schedules, after all - that it may air on New Year's Day instead, and implied it may not be a Xmas-themed story.

The Mirror took that and went with a headline of "Xmas episode scrapped because Steven Moffat has run out of ideas for this year."

So, um, bullshit, there is a Special for the Xmas holidays.

There's a reason I always take these reports with a grain of salt - well, a plate of salt with a large helping of salt on the side.

I swear I read a report that had a Chibnall quote that said the Christmas had all expunged their Christmas-set themes, the last one pretty much ignoring it.

While I technically agree with that reasoning, I also don't think that's a good reason to drop such a nice, annual tradition.

While it wouldn't be such a bag thing for it to show up at New Years, with a little more freedom, I do think it would be a big miss to not have it on Christmas Day. For American audiences, it is nice to have something to put on that evening that's vaguely Christmas themed AND is new content.

However, in universe, New Year's is not especially a great day for the Doctor. ;-)

Good move if true. The last couple really felt like they struggled to shoehorn in any Christmas references. They were getting increasingly contrived with justifying the Christmas theme.

Less episodes of Chibnail's Doctor Who is only a good thing at this point, so I definitely wouldn't miss a Christmas episode this year. I'm fairly disappointed that it looks like it will still happen, even if its a New Years special instead.

They don't actually have to be Christmas-themed, just set at Christmas like season one's 'The Unquiet Dead'. And actually, they don't have to be set at Christmas at all. If memory serves the Only Fools and Horses Christmas Special where they went to Florida wasn't set at Christmas.

Actually we don't know for certain whether the airdate move is true or not - it won't be decided until the end of this month. Either way it's still a Festive special in the Xmas holidays, though, so...
Well, I guess it doesn't matter much anyway, a New Year's special only really means waiting an extra week. Still, Christmas won't really feel the same without Doctor Who.
