Only two STAR TREK Movies of the thirteen produced movies had no humanoid villain...

Which did you like better as a ST movie without a humanoid villain?

"Veejur" is at least fleshed out as a... 'character'? ;) It has a defined role, a motivation, a history that is revealed. The whale probe is just a generic conceputal enemy, a means to an end, only there to give the characters a reason to deliver the aesop, and dispatched almost as summarily as it arrives.

Sybok, hijacking the 1701-A.
I don't see Sybok as the villain. Sybok was an antagonist, surely, but he had been deluded by the being at the center of the galaxy, and Sybok wasn't evil.

For that matter, neither were the aliens looking for the whales nor even V'ger. I don't believe V'ger was evolved fully enough to be evil; it would get good and evil from Decker. The whale aliens were just looking after their whale buddies. They weren't evil either, and they weren't actually villainous. TMP and TVH didn't even have villains, humanoid or not.

I mean, the mother Horta fried redshirts and miners alike, but she wasn't the villain of that story. It was the ignorant miners destroying the Horta eggs that were doing wrong, though they weren't actually villains per se either.

Yeah, I guess big-concept movies attract more viewers when you have somebody you can shoot/blow up/punch in the mouth/yell at. Clear villain/hero conflict.

When there's no real bad guy, just obstacles that are not bad, merely in the way of you goal, it's not as compelling unless you have a plot hook like comedy, visual spectacles, etc.

Star Trek IV for me.

Wasn't "Man" the symbolic villain in The Voyage Home, Galileo7, for eliminating the Humpback Whale species from existence?
Looking back , I guess STEPhon IT, then Kirk was the villain of WOK for stranding Khan and his followers on a planet that was doomed. ;)

My favorite Star Trek stories had no villain. Maybe that's why the movies as a whole leave me disappointed. For me, Star Trek is about learning and discovery, meeting new peoples, going new places. Yes there are plenty of stories about rescues and patrols and even wars but they aren't the primary drive of the premise. When the movie reduced everything to "threat of the moment" it really lost something very important.

Having said all that, I pick TMP's Vejur over the big turd with the dingleberry hanging from it. V'Ger had a reused background story, but it did something with it, at it's heart, with all of it's awesome power, it was unfulfilled and seeking it out, like we all are to some extent. The whale turd was willing to wipe out anyone in it's path for what? To find out how the last episode of Single Female Humpback Lawyer ended? Why destroy all life in Earth's oceans when the right answer wasn't received? If there were any other whales, they would have been killed. What if Humpbackish had drifted over the centuries and they all spoke like Minke whales now. Are buffalo still extinct, too? Will a giant space buffalo show up next?

I know you're kidding, but Kirk couldn't of possibly known Ceti Alpha 6 would explode, and Kirk's decision to put Noonian and his people there was a merciful, utopian sentence for attempting to murder him. The villain was actually karma because it can be a B(ADWORD) CH!

I guess the point I was trying to make of the thirteen movies only two [TMP, TVH] had no actor(s) playing an onscreen rival to Kirk(Shatner, Pine) or Picard(Stewart), i.e., V'Ger and the un"manned" whale probe. :vulcan:
