Deadline I've recently been rewatching NYPD Blue and have been enjoying it like I did when it was originally on. Such a great show. I can't imagine doing the show without Dennis Franz.
Without David Milch's unique voice, I'm not sure what this new version of Blue brings to the table that will distinguish it from the glut of cop shows already on the air. The show ran for 12 years, but the Milch years (S1-7) were the best, and (not coincidentally) the years they won all their awards.
Dennis Franz hasn't acted since NYPD Blue ended. It would make sense he wouldn't be in this revival (although would anyone even come back? Henry Simmons and Mark-Paul Gosselaar are currently on other shows and most of the other characters either died or retired) but the hook to revive this show is a really sour one. You're just gonna kill off the heart and soul of 12 seasons of NYPD Blue off screen? How is that supposed to start a new era? On a side note, David Caruso seems to have also retired since CSI: Miami ended.
Ugh, I was pleased to see this headline and then my pleasant surprise turned to disappointment at reading that Sipowicz was to be killed off. They could’ve kept him around as a recurring, retired character, FFS.
Bochco died earlier this year, so it would be kind of hard to have him involved. I suppose they could start production meetings by holding a séance...
Yep,normally I would be on board for this type of show but arbitrarily killing off(a phrase that I’m starting to hate) Sipowicz makes me wish the show will immediately tank. Odds are that the studio execs had a shit haemorrage at the thought of an un-pc character like Andy being alive in their universe.
Kind of thought about that as well. Having the main character be a open racist is part of what made him interesting. It gave the character a edge you didn't see that often back then with tv characters. Plus as he grew over the years and became a better person it felt, earned. I would even say the character might have inspired the Tony Soprano character, many years later. Jason
I think the character was more of a bigot than a racist, Sipowicz during the show had issues with people who happened to be of color but he never been that way towards police officers of his ilk. I don't think he hated Arthur Fancy but didn't like what he thought of him.
Scripts written via Ouija Board™, could be a hell of a lot worse. They could do casting with a Magic-8 Ball™.
I can't imagine a time when people weren't bringing up stupid shit like 'PC' at every turn. NYPD Blue was on ABC between 1993 and 2005. Disney bought ABC in 1996.
Another cop show? I guess people just like the comfort that the standard cop show, lawyer shot, doctor show brings. Just something to watch and space out to. I'm convinced that the viewing audience just likes watching people in suits run around with guns or doctors spewing medical terms.
I agree but "NYPD Blue" was always a cut above most of them. All Stephen Bocho shows were. They elevated the format instead of just being another cop show among many cop shows. Jason

Most of them are. At least on network tv. "NYPD BLue" and "Homicide" were the only two that ever felt different to me. On cable though it's different. "The Shield" was amazing and they say the same for "The Wire" but I haven't seen it. Then you got something like "Better Call Saul" which is technically a lawyer show but it's better than any lawyer show you will see on network tv. Jason
Every show can be broken down into some kind of genre or format or formula... it's what the writers and producers do with that and where they take it that makes some shows better than others. The original NYPD Blue was one of those shows, especially in its early seasons. Whether the new one can live up to its predecessor remains to be seen.
