I was ostracized as a geek.
Being in honors classes had its advantages. I wasn't ostracized for the most part.
But even back then, I thrived off being on the outside. I just didn't give a shit and everyone knew it. One time, in eighth grade, someone told me about something, "That's not normal." My exact response to them was "Since when have I been normal?" Then a third kid said to the other kid, "He's got a point."
Being able to fight back also helps. If they think you can beat the shit out of them if they piss you off, they'll leave you alone.
One time, one kid tried to put a thumb-tack on my seat for me to sit down on. I caught it in time. The teacher hadn't gotten to the room yet, I knew who it was, and I went over to him, pushed him against the wall, put my knee to his chest, and told him to never to do that ever again. He left me alone for the rest of the year, after that. So did everyone else.

I blame on the fact that we're American. We normally read it as 01/17.

Small school for me. Lots of my friends were Trek fans in some way or another.
Because here in the U.S. - the date is written 01/17/19.
[That said, I really do wonder if the producers realized how the premiere date would look to those counties where the date would in fact read 17/01...
