From the trailers it looks like he gets injured and Burnham has to rescue him. My guess is that he's recovering in his quarters (which look really cool btw) in the scene you mentioned. Either that or Burnham and Saru are rehearsing for a production of Romeo and Juliet. Let the shipping commence.
