News CBS building their own studio for Star Trek

The studio for Star Trek is being built underground by a crew of 10 German construction workers and their foreman. It was supposed to be a top-secret type of secret but the foreman got drunk and you know what they say about loose lips. An enforcer warned the foreman not to do it again, but the cat's out of the bag now for us to discuss.

Like this post if you get it. ;)

One day, the Star Trek coming out of this studio will be more than 99% pure. High-grade. A former chemistry teacher will be in charge of it and It'll sell like hotcakes.
Glad they put a science guy in charge. ;)

Interestingly, two of the executive producers of DSC are incharge of building and running the new studio. CBS must really be happy with DSC.

I would imagine that at the moment it's probably just an empty old warehouse.
Not sure if They have actually started building anything yet.

Good point. Or it might even still be a vacant area.

It does say that it is 18 miles from downtown Toronto.

Which would probably put it in the far west end of Mississauga - which makes sense, as that's the only part of the city where I've seen much in the way of vacant land. Mississauga is spread outwards - there aren't a lot of tall buildings there (unlike in Toronto, where it feels like there's a 30-story condo being constructed on every other corner). There's a fair bit of new construction going on near Erin Mills Town Centre, which is in the far west end, across the street from the hospital where I go for my regular hemochromatosis treatment - it could be there. (I work in the east end of Mississauga, about a 20-minute drive east of said hospital. After I'm done, I have to hustle to the bus stop, because my view of approaching traffic is blocked in part by the hoarding around the construction site, and I don't want to miss the bus - they don't come that often.)

But it could also be in the northwest corner of the city - I have a friend who works in that part of the city, and there's a lot of open space up there too. Next time I see him I'll have to ask if there's any major construction taking place near his office.

I work for the company that makes the city of Mississauga's parcel mapping tech. You're welcome. :)

That said, putting it in Mississauga makes sense. Away from the hustle of the GTA, further from the airports (but better that building it east of Toronto, and cheaper land. Good choice IMO.

"John Weber and Frank Siracusa" have literally nothing to do creatively with Discovery. Their names don't even appear in the title sequence. These guys are accountants.

I guess them being referred to as "producers on Discovery" simply comes from the fact that DIS is currently the only show that is created by All Access, and you have to give the guys working for that service a title.

That doesn't matter. They're still credited as the co-executive producers of Season 1, and I'm guessing executive producers of Season 2 and Short Treks. Not all producing roles are creative.

Because that would look stupid.

Yet they use CGI for outer space scenes and everyone enjoys those.

Plus, on a practical level, think of all the wood and fiberglass and other materials saved from building, tearing down, and recycling sets. CGI synced to actors has been done before... for both TV and big movies. The only problem is, CGI made at 4K won't scale to 8k. But there's a rational limit to the density of pixels within relative sq ft as well...

The technology has come amazingly far in just the past few decades. Big budget movies use virtual sets seamlessly and television is fast catching up. While low-budget attempts like Sanctuary were weak, it was noticeable but well done in the reboot of V, and Krypton's virtual sets are some of the best I have ever seen.

Even the Star Trek fan film Horizon made great use of shakycam and JJ-style lens flares to disguise their entirely virtual NX-01 sets.

I could see Discovery or The Picard Show using virtual sets for viewscreen conversations with other ships, or the occasional completely bizarro alien landscape or vessel.

I'd prefer they keep building huge lavish sets for the show, and only use CGI when it's literally impossible to do it any other way. But if CGI sets enables more scope, without sacrificing quality, then I'm all for it.

And Mississauga is maintaining an online database of open land parcels...

Cool. That's the sort of thing I was looking for last night, but I have poor Google-fu. The area I was thinking of, near Credit Valley Hospital, is sites 123/125/128. But I see there are a couple of much larger sites: 60/62/63, 234/236, and 284. Not to mention a glut of unused land around Hurontario, between the 401 and 407. Any of them would probably be good choices, though it would depend on their precise criteria.

Nice job. (I'm an old map geek. :) )

Don't you mean "closer to the airports"? It's further from the Island airport, sure, but who flies into there from LA? It's certainly closer to Pearson than Pinewood, and also Hamilton and Buffalo.
