that's a nice way to look at it. but it's also alienating to people who want to watch this stuff but can't.
this is not what i'm talking about.Whilst i think there are genuinely people who cannot afford $6.99 a month, most of the people who feel 'alienated' are entitled fans who think trek should be exempt from a pay wall despite the fact that they have been forking out money on merchandise for years.
this is not what i'm talking about.
i'm talking about people who are restricted from viewing this material because they're not in the US. whether or not they are willing to pay for the content.
no apologies necessary.Apologies, i didn't follow the flow of conversation clearly enough.
In response to your point, I'm outside the U.S and watch Discovery via netflix. If we don't get the Short treks, my level of alienation will probably be in response to how relevant to the plot of season 2 is. If I need to have watched the short treks to understand something in season 2 then i will most likely ask netflix 'why they gotta do a brother like that?'
no apologies necessary.
i'm in the US so i'm not really even affected, i just think it's a lousy strategy for a property with an international fan base not to make content available internationally. these short treks are a great first step toward expanding the franchise, but kind of an awkward one if they didn't ensure the rights were in order worldwide.
in any case, i'm still not convinced CBS won't find a way to make these available in some form. maybe on iTunes or even youtube -- hell, they'll probably end up on youtube illegally anyway.
It's not showfriends, it's showbusiness.
Apart from Netflix/Crave who else would be interested in getting these shorts? They're too short for any regular TV station and I doubt Amazon would want them since they don't have Discovery and these Short Treks wouldn't make much sense without it.
Anyone really desperate to see these will find ways to see them.
One dollar sign, a whole number and a lot of zerosRoddenberry's vision definitely included a few dollar signs

Star Trek: First Contact contains the most accurate portrayal of Gene Roddenberry on film. They just changed his name to Zephram Cochrane.
I'm prepared to wager money that most of DSC's audience isn't die hard fans. It's ordinary people.Just a cool perk that die-hard fans get for shelling out a bit more money.
