Star Trek: Short Treks

It might be Netflix just doesn't want to have them. I can't see CBS All Access restricting them from international release.

that's a nice way to look at it. but it's also alienating to people who want to watch this stuff but can't.

Whilst i think there are genuinely people who cannot afford $6.99 a month, most of the people who feel 'alienated' are entitled fans who think trek should be exempt from a pay wall despite the fact that they have been forking out money on merchandise for years.

this is not what i'm talking about.

i'm talking about people who are restricted from viewing this material because they're not in the US. whether or not they are willing to pay for the content.

Apologies, i didn't follow the flow of conversation clearly enough.

In response to your point, I'm outside the U.S and watch Discovery via netflix. If we don't get the Short treks, my level of alienation will probably be in response to how relevant to the plot of season 2 is. If I need to have watched the short treks to understand something in season 2 then i will most likely ask netflix 'why they gotta do a brother like that?'

no apologies necessary.

i'm in the US so i'm not really even affected, i just think it's a lousy strategy for a property with an international fan base not to make content available internationally. these short treks are a great first step toward expanding the franchise, but kind of an awkward one if they didn't ensure the rights were in order worldwide.

in any case, i'm still not convinced CBS won't find a way to make these available in some form. maybe on iTunes or even youtube -- hell, they'll probably end up on youtube illegally anyway.

According to CBS twitter, this is an All Access thing only.

My guess is Short Treks will be used as a extra incentive to buy the season 2 blu-ray. Kinda like what Marvel did with their MCU 'one-shots'.

Apart from Netflix/Crave who else would be interested in getting these shorts? They're too short for any regular TV station and I doubt Amazon would want them since they don't have Discovery and these Short Treks wouldn't make much sense without it.

Anyone really desperate to see these will find ways to see them.

Netflix and Crave are the official distributors of DSC around the whole world, so this is a rather pointless rhetorical question. No one would be complaining if the Short Treks were limited to streaming and not 'regular tv' because the show itself has the same limitations. It's just bizarre to create these and then limit their distribution even more than that of the show itself. Aren't they supposed to be promotional? Do they want to grow the audience and gain more attention or not?

I think it is kind of strange...if I did not had Netflix I could not see any DSC...and now we cannot even see the shorts?? And Netflix is not doing it self any favours these days either....
The streaming business and their stupid license limitations is not endearing to us as customers....why does it has to be so limiting?

I am getting tired of meeting this ever persistant wall of limitations....it has an adverse effect on me, no it will not make me want it even more.....making it too difficult will simply make people choose something else.
This is not 20 years ago anymore....we have a global intrest in stuff these days.
And with everybody making their own streaming "services", all I see is questionable expenses and limitations.

I do think the setup of these shorts might be a harder sell. They're very short. They're only four of them at the moment and all together they make a single episode. Not even movie length. If there were more of them or more of them planned and announced it might be an easier sell.

I would imagine all four will be packaged together in the end and maybe then they'll be sold to Netflix or put up on iTunes or Amazon for purchase as one thing. And/or included in the season 2 blu-ray. That's an easier to sell. Short episodes like this isn't a problem for CBS AA cause it's their own platform. Going outside of it will be harder.Which makes me wonder if they'll show up on CBS AA in Canada now that it's there if Crave doesn't pick them up. These would be hard to show on network TV so I wouldn't be surprised if Space as well passes on them at the moment.

We all took it for granted I think that it would just be a given it would show up on Netflix outside of the US/Canada. However it would be better in the long run if they were their own series. You can then include other eras or shows. As a result it would require a separate contract and for something currently so short it might not be worth it for Netflix UK, etc to pick them up at the moment.

It's not like there isn't an audience for Star Trek on Netflix. They clearly is and Discovery did well on it. So I think it has to be the format of these episodes and the current number that is the real problem.

This isn't a problem exclusive to Star Trek. Netflix refuse to air supplementary stuff The CW does for its shows, despite holding international rights, so UK fans have to rely on YouTube or the Blu-rays.

So at first I did think this was some cockamamie scheme to get die-hard Trek fans to sign up a few months before DIS begins, but I think it's the wrong paradigm.

I think this basically like the "backer content" that people who help contribute to kickstarters for niche games get these days. Just a cool perk that die-hard fans get for shelling out a bit more money.
